I have lived in Maine for just over five years now and I’ve been to some very good trails that are in the proximity of the town I live. My favorite trails so far were created by and are maintained by Maine Huts & Trails in Carrabassett Valley. The specific trails lead from the Carrabassett Town Office to the Poplar Hut. There’s a stream that runs along almost the entire trail and it’s a rather beautiful area. I’ve written about this system a lot. Actually, I think the stream is called the Poplar Stream. Isn’t that something?
I’ve also gone hiking to waterfalls in Farminton, Maine, Coos Canyon in Byron, Maine and I hiked a short trail right at the base of Mount Blue. Of course, I’ve done a lot more than that, but this is what I can think off of the top of my head. The majority of my hiking has been done in an area that’s not more than three miles from my house. There are many logging roads and snowmobiles trails nearby that are great for getting out there in the woods.
A recent favorite hiking spot for me is the property I recently purchased from a neighbor. I started out in Maine with just five acres, but over the past year, I added about ten to that for a total of 15. I’ve been out on this land quite a bit since then and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. Adjacent to the land I own is another 46 acres that runs along a brook that’s absolutely stunning. I went snow hiking across all this property a few months ago and it was a lot of fun. As a matter of fact, I went out and did a bit of hiking this afternoon. I’ll attach some photos of my woods below. We were out there looking for birds nests and cutting trails as well. I am a master trail cutter. Nobody cuts trails like I do.
My question for you is, what are the best trails to hike in Maine? What have you hiked? What’s been your favorite so far? If you had to recommend one area, what would it be? I live in Western Maine and I’ll travel probably about an hour from Farmington, so if you know of any place around me, please let me know. I want to know about all places, but the ones around me the most. Thanks!
