After months of tossing and turning all night and waking up with horrible pain in our backs, we decided to break down and get a new mattress.
The old mattress was a Simmons Beautyrest that was really nice. I got the whole set for a little over $400 about ten years ago. Well, since that time, two “less than cushiony” sections have formed in two areas of the mattress. I don’t think I could’ve taken another night of it.
The thing I really like about the old mattress were the independently pocketed coils. This is the “bowling ball” mattress, where you don’t feel your significant other roll around. It was nice. Now, we got a regular old King Koil mattress. It was the cheapest one they offered at $360, just for the mattress. It was $499 for the set.
Here is the funny part. When I called 1-800-MATTRESS last night, I got a nice saleslady. Now, I know it’s probably not the most exciting thing to be a mattress salesperson, but listen up. I told her that I want the mattress only. She gladly was ok with that. Then, she tried to slip in that I need the box spring. She said they recommend getting a new one because the mattress can wear out in less than a year with an old box spring. This may be true if we had a really old box spring, but ours looks and feels brand new. Also, I did all sorts of research on the internet about this topic and the consensus is that unless you have a really bad and sagging box spring, you should be fine. Then, she tried to upsell me because the mattess that we picked out didn’t have any edge support. What the hell is edge support? I felt the edge about a half-hour ago and it feels like there is some support there. I guess I can’t sleep on the edge anymore.
I love the way these types of places like to bait and switch. I told her that I was happy with my choice. It kind of reminded me of Rob’s adventure in Atlanta when he tried to get his brakes done. We almost jumped over the counter and housed the creep who was selling us a line of %[email protected]#.
Anyway, tonight is the first night on the new mattress. I will give you a report in the morning.
Nice experience!! It is true that sometimes the most simple stuff is the best. But these companies live off of the stupid details they add to the mattresses every 6 months, the same as every industry. People believe they will be happier with something new that is the same that the previous one but with a color or detail that makes it different. But in the end…the same.
good luck!
