The Geek Squad Ain’t Coming

June 5, 2007

I was working on setting up a new website last night on my home desktop when things on the computer started acting a little quirky. I decided to restart the computer to clear out any problems it may be having. Well, upon restart, I was greeted by what is known as the blue screen of death.

I tried a few things, but I am in no way anyone who should be messing around with the inner workings of computers. There are people out there for that. The blue screen error message was, “DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL” and had some numbers below that kept changing. I visited Microsoft’s support page to no avail.

After having a little fit, I pulled out my laptop which was still able to connect to the internet through my wireless router. Laura’s computer is still able to connect as well. I looked up the Geek Squad’s webpage. I figured, what the hell…let’s get someone out here just to fix the thing. Since I was in their area, the visit would cost around $250. Well, after a bunch of steps on the telephone, I spoke with an operator who took all the pertinent information. After about 15 minutes or so, she advised me that the first time they would be able to get out to my house would be June 23. JUNE 23??? I asked her again, just to see if she was kidding or not. With the way I operate, I can go through two computers before June 23 ever rolls around. I gave a little chuckle and asked if she had anything earlier. She said, “Well, we can make this a 911 call. That will be double the price.” I gave another chuckle and may have added some other noises and said, “What? You are telling me that it is going to cost $500 to come out to my house to fix my computer? I can buy a whole new one for that price.” I mean, c’mon…I like getting stuff done quickly, but I am not an idiot. So, needless to say, the Geek Squad isn’t paying me a visit…or should I say, I am not paying them to visit.

This morning, I called a local computer repair place. They will be around later today, so I will have to give a call back. I have the computer in my car just in case I find an interested party today.
