Outdoor Research Sombriolet Sun Hat

June 6, 2013

A little something about Florida that I think you should know – it’s sunny down here. Well, not right at this moment, as we’re in the middle of some rain storm, but in general, it’s sunny. It may not be the sun you’re thinking of though. The sun down here is more direct. Let’s just say that when you’re standing in it, you know it. You can feel it and you want to get out of it. The humidity is one thing and the sun is quite another. I typically don’t really mind either, but minding it sometimes isn’t the issue. Protecting yourself from it is important.

I think the thing I’m most concerned about it getting the tops of my ears burned. The back of the neck is bad and the shoulders are even worse. Unlike my younger days though, I now wear a shirt, so the shoulder thing isn’t that much of a concern now. It’s the ears and neck I’m worried about. And I really don’t need the hassle.

I knew one of the items I would need after moving here would be a protective hat of some type. I had originally intended on getting a really cool cowboy hat, but for some reason or another, that idea never came to fruition. What I did end of getting though is an, “Outdoor Research Sombriolet Sun Hat.”

I found this hat on Amazon for $28. Not bad for being the last hat of the type I’ll hopefully ever buy. I don’t see myself ever getting another one. Perhaps a rain hat or a hat for the cold, but sun hat – nah.

Since it really hasn’t been sunny since I’ve received it, I haven’t had the chance to test it out. I can tell you though, it’s comfortable. I ordered the XL because as I learned while measuring my head, I’m sized extra large. Can you imagine learning that of yourself for the very first time? That you have an extra large head? I always thought I was a medium. Oh well.

I’m sure we’ll get some pictures of me wearing it at some point. We’ll most likely be hiking or walking on the beach or something like that. I’m not sure, but what I am sure of is that you’ll get a little chuckle when you see them.
