This is a drill I’d like to persuade Jeff to get into. It would help those of us who rely too much on the use of our hands, arms and strength. This is actually an awesome drill for all of us.
If there’s one thing I’ve noticed in all Jiu-Jitsu schools I’ve attended, it’s that some folks don’t use their legs as much as they should. I mean, your legs take up a good portion of your body. Why not use them when sparring? I use my legs at every turn. When I use them, I like to think of them as extra hands and by doing so, they pretty much get in everyone’s way. Now, that’s not to say that everything I do with my legs is effective. Sometimes they get in my own way, but hey, I’m trying.
Check this video out. It’s Rener Gracie (my favorite Gracie) sparring with a new purple belt at his academy. Ignore the comments and look at the challenge Rener gives the purple belt. Now, imagine he was using his hands. I think the purpose of the whole thing is to get so good with your legs, you rely less on the rest of your body. The way it should be.
