The Very Interesting Luna Moth

July 6, 2014

Last week, or the week before, Laura and I noticed some sort of bird-like creature flying around outside the bedroom window. This was during the evening some time. The creature landed on the screen, stayed there for a while and then flew off. The next morning, after walking out the front door, we discovered what we think was making all the commotion – a Luna Moth.

And just as coincidence would have it, my friend over at Midlife in Maine wrote a post about their very own Luna Moth that day.

I’ve never seen this type of moth before. We’ve got some enormous moths up here in Maine, but this thing takes the cake. At any given time (during the night hours), we can have up to five of these resting near the light on the front wall. They just seem to hang out and then disappear the next day.

These moths have a lot of detail, but I’d say the strangest, and most freaky thing is the face on their backs. Take a look at this picture and tell me you don’t see a face.

If you see one of these moths at your house, rest assured that you can just leave them alone and go about your business. They won’t bother you and are quite tranquil. Except when they are trying to land on your bedroom screen. During those times, they can get excited, but they go away after a while.
