On Monday, I ran out to get some groceries. Since we arrived here, we’ve been eating…well, how should I say…not so good. Not that anything has been particularly bad, it just hasn’t been a good home cooked meal or anything like that. I felt change was in order.
On my way out the door, Laura asked if I would pick up some sunflower seeds. She likes to put them in her yogurt in the morning. I said, “sure” and left.
When I arrived at the grocery store, I had about half the cart full when I realized I had forgotten all about the sunflower seeds. I pushed the cart over to the “seed” section and looked through the offerings. Publix is pretty good about this. They offer a lot.
While the sunflower seeds were plentiful, so were the choices. I boiled them down to two larger sized plastic containers of roasted and raw seeds. I couldn’t, for the life of me, remember which type she prefers. I simply picked up both and put them in the cart.
When I got home, I hid the roasted seeds behind my back and walked over to Laura. I said, “I got you a present” and showed her the seeds. I told her they were roasted and waited for her response. It was mild-tempered. At that moment, I discovered that she preferred the raw seeds. I ran back into the kitchen and returned to her with the raw seeds. I showed her and with that, I saw the smile she so often has when handed sunflower seeds. Kidding, but she was happier than before. I told her that I would eat the roasted ones and she said they were both good.
After purchasing these things, I wondered, “Why do people eat them? Is there some sort of a health benefit to sunflower seeds?” I did a little research and found out that yes, sunflower seeds are high in selenium, magnesium, copper and vitamin e. Some people say that just ¼ cup of sunflower seeds a day can keep heart troubles away. There are many reasons for this, beyond the minerals and vitamin I mentioned above.
I don’t want to reinvent the wheel here, so I’ll simply link to the pages that best describe the health benefits of sunflower seeds. They do a better job than I’ll ever do and more importantly, it’s already done. Enjoy.
