Happy Thanksgiving to all. What a fun day. Laura and I made the best of it and fell asleep last night very tired and stuffed to the gills. We went hiking, for a walk, ate, drank and watched a movie. We even saw Piper the horse.
Piper is our favorite horse across the street and is a sick-ass bully. We walked over to give him treats yesterday and boy was he ever the same exact thing as he was last year. He gallops over to us in a mad frenzy and kicks at any other horse that comes near us. Of course, Laura likes some other horses because they’re sweet, but Piper has long been my favorite. He’s a draft horse and he’s huge.
It’s fun to watch him swing his head back and forth as he shoos away the others. Seriously though, horses are dramatic beasts. They chase each other around, kick and scream, bite and try to pick-pocket you if they think you have hidden treats. It’s like putting up with bad kids in a nursery school. Jeez. This is how they make me feel sometimes:
That’s Piper and me. Would you like to see some of my more recent photos of Voleman? He likes to lay on my legs and sleep for hours. I’ll admit, it gets annoying at times.
Laura grabbed another really great photo of one of the horses yesterday. I’m not sure who this one is. I’m thinking it may be new because he hung out with us for a while. No one usually does that because of the problem I mentioned earlier – Piper. Check him out.
Isn’t he beautiful? He was sweet too.
I’ve been meaning to mention this for a while, but I kept on forgetting. As I was mowing the lawn and trimming all sorts of brush from the woods, I stumbled across a moose shed. We’ve found deer antlers in the woods last year, but never anything from an actual moose. Needless to say, it was exciting for me. The only bad part is that there wasn’t much left. I have no idea why. I guess the other half broke off somewhere.
I’d really love to find one of those huge ones. That would probably make my year. I’d hang it on the wall for sure. I’m not going to do that with this one. As a matter of fact, this one will probably sit on this bench forever.
Thanksgiving was wonderful. We began cooking two days before and now have a refrigerator that’s bursting at the seams. The best part of the meal was Laura’s vegetarian mushroom wellington. It was superb. We walked and hiked in the morning and then came back to eat and drink wine. Here’s a photo of our cozy little table. I just had to take a picture of it. It looked so cool.
After we were finished eating, we took a break and then got together again to watch “March of the Wooden Soldiers.” That was pretty fun.
I have to mention one thing here – enjoying Thanksgiving with just one other person has proven to be quite enjoyable. Laura and I had a lot of fun shopping and cooking together and I liked the fact that there was virtually no stress. We planned this day earlier in the month and as it got closer, we started putting things into action. We prepared many of the sides two days before and then the main wellington the day before. By the time Thanksgiving Day finally arrived, all we had to do was to heat things up.
Sitting at the table talking was just as much fun. I finished eating first and then hung my legs over the corner of the table as I drank my wine. I thought about the calmness of everything and thought of days like this in our future. A little planning here and a bit of cooking there can make for a great time.
In other news, we woke up to snow this morning. I saw a few flakes before we fell asleep last night which ended up to be about an inch on the ground this morning. The season has officially begun. Now, if we could just finish up watching “Miracle on 34th Street,” we’d be good to go.
