I was driving back from the motocross track this afternoon and had just turned into the driveway when I noticed our friend, the Gopher Tortoise making his way up our side lawn. What he was doing across the street, I’ll never know because there’s enough vegetation over on his side to keep him busy for a year.
After I shut the car off, I walked over to the turtle and rubbed his back lightly. I wanted to see if he was aware that I was near. I quickly discovered that the answer was yes. He was definitely aware that I was near because he suddenly squatted and hissed at me. Okay, I won’t do that again. I was concerned about his safety though – being all the way across the street and all.
I went inside and told Laura that the tortoise was back and that he was walking up our side lawn, eating the grass as he goes – and if she wanted to get any photos of him, the time was there. She promptly got up to take advantage of the situation. The pictures below are the result of that effort.
