The Back Pain Of Rolling

May 1, 2013

Yesterday was my “get back into rolling” day down here in Florida. The last time I’d been on the mat was last Wednesday and from then until yesterday morning, I was consumed with lifting plastic totes onto a trailer, cleaning a house to move out of, driving far, far too long and then lifting many of those totes back off that same trailer. Whatever flexibility and movement my body was used to from BJJ rolling all these years, I think it went down the tubes just in the past week.

I did get some of it back yesterday though. I had a great time working out with the guys at Fight Science Jiu-Jitsu in Flagler Beach and I have to say, it quenched my thirst for what I was looking for. I sweat like it was nobody’s business and enjoyed every minute of it. I’m sure all the guys and gals in the classes were looking at me like I was nuts because I’m but a white looking northerner, but I’m sure I’ll fit in nonetheless.

I did pinch something in my back. This happens here and there and it’s most likely from not warming up thoroughly enough. It’s one of those upper back, on the side pinches that hurts when I move my head from left to right. These things usually take a few days to disappear, but I’ve gotten rid of them faster by taking some Advil and hammering it out of my body. Usually a round or two with Toby would clear things up.

I’ve been torturing myself with what to do with the Jitsu scene down here in Palm Coast. It’s quite different than the one up in Connecticut, to say the least. Down here, there’s a strong emphasis in “Gracie” Jiu-Jitsu, while up North, the emphasis is much more on “Brazilian” Jiu-Jitsu. I’m going to write a post pointing out the differences between the two, in case you aren’t aware. Don’t worry about it for now.

I think I’ve come to a decision on the strategy I’d like to take for a while. And it’s a decision that I’m sure will reap me the most benefit from the style of training I’d like to move forth with. It has to do with John-Michael Kaleikini of Fight Science. He’s an extremely legit black belt and I’m going to do everything in my power to soak up everything he’s willing to teach me. I just have to strike the right deal. More on that when I get things squared away.
