We took the leap. The leap to Costco (finally) up in Enfield, CT…near the border of MA. We have been meaning to do this for a very long time, but never got around to it.
Back at our old house, we were members of Sam’s Club, which is just an extension of Wal-Mart. We got pretty sick of it and didn’t renew our yearly plan. It seemed like there was some sort of stagnation with its stock. My father kept telling me that Costco is much better. I remember Costco from the Danbury location and it was pretty good. My father and I are a little different when it comes to shopping at Costco though. He likes to look at tools and equipment, while I like to look at the heads of lettuce.
One of the main things I was looking for was high quality food, mainly produce, and a big store. We visited BJs in Willimantic earlier in the week and were disappointed. It seemed like an older store and was much smaller than the others. I like to feel like I am in a stadium.
The Enfield Cosco was built in 2004, which means it has all the latest perks, groceries, tire changes, pharmacy, etc…and for those people who need to have dessert while they go food shopping, there is a fast food place. It’s almost sad.
Anyway, membership is $50 and good for a year, so we did it.
Yes, that is the actual Enfield store.
We filled our cart up last night and made out like bandits. I got a 2 1/2 pound bag of spinach and a huge box of veggie burgers, among other things. The prices were pretty good, but you can never really tell. On some stuff, they are definitely better. On other stuff, it’s a little tricky. The good thing is that we don’t need to keep running out to the grocery store for every little thing, like we used to. Now, we just load up the trunk and that’s that. Of course, we are still going to have to go to the regular grocery store for some stuff, but this place helps out a bunch.

I never thought it would take so long to unpack a garage.
It’s not that I have a lot of stuff, it’s that I refuse to just pile things up like I did in our other house. I say “other” because it’s not sold yet. There, I kind of had stuff over there, over here and then over there again. There was no organization. One thing I really want is one bad-ass tool box…like a Snap-On or something like that. I saw one I liked in Sam’s Club a while back. Who knows if it’s there anymore because we haven’t been to that store in over a year.
Well, I already did my “screw a strip of wood to the wall and then hang all my rakes and stuff off of screws trick” a few days ago. I just did another one today. I also hung both of my ladders up nice and neat. Today’s challenge was to head over to the Home Depot to get some real garage shelves.
Mission accomplished. I bought two heavy duty shelving units. They measure 48″ wide, 24″ deep and 72″ high. I would say they are very sturdy. Now, with these large shelves, I can store and organize all my stuff as neatly as I have always imagined. It’s funny what one imagines when left alone in a garage.
We have our new garbage service coming to drop off the 65 gallon trash can on Friday, so I can get rid of some of the junk I put together in the cans I brought with us. That should make some more room to work with. After that, I should have made enough room to actually pull the cars in if we needed to.

For some reason, I am getting a magazine from Sam’s Club. Perhaps it is because we used to be members of the store. A few months ago, we stopped going because we just couldn’t take another bite of their food. Not that it was bad, but let’s just say there wasn’t too much variety.
Back to getting their magazine. Anyway, as I was tossing it into my recycling bin this afternoon, I noticed a big full page ad that read, “Eco Home Makeover.” I saw a picture of a wind turbine as well as solar panels on a roof. It also had a price in large print - $44,000.
Needless to say, I was a little intrigued. Apparently, Sam’s Club is now offering energy efficient home services. Here is what you get for the $44,000:
- One week vacation while your home is being “greened”
- Solar panels
- Wind turbine
- Internet monitoring
- Energy Star appliances for kitchen and laundry
- New Energy Star lighting throughout house (CFLs)
- A housewarming party upon your return home
- PBS will cover the renovation
I’m sure there will be some opinion out there about this, but that doesn’t seem bad to me at all. At least a big retailer is doing something like this. Also, it’s good that this kind of stuff is put right in front of the faces of Sam’s Club shoppers. Sometimes it needs to be put right in front of some people’s faces, if you know what I mean.
They claim that this makeover will be able to provide energy to a 3,000 - 4,000 square foot house. That’s not bad at all.
