Stihl BR 550 Backpack Blower

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Today was another day of running around. I had to head up to in West to meet the . After that, I had to go over to Pat’s Equipment in Tolland for a new blower.

I am sure I will write all about the tile in another post. Now, I would like to share an awesome new tool I got today…the blower. When I bought the , I wasn’t too enthused. I mean, yeah, I’ll use it when I need it. The blower on the other hand, is something I will actually enjoy using when I need it.

Take a look…

This is the Stihl BR 550 backpack blower. It’s the second most powerful one they have. I just used it on the driveway and the and am very happy I got one so powerful. I have recently heard good things about those hand-held ones, but was skeptical. I used to use a commercial blower and knew what it was capable of. I couldn’t imagine me trying to out of the gardens, come , and me not getting wicked mad at one of those hand-held machines.

Here are the specs:

: 64.8 cc (3.95 cu. in.)
: 3.0 kW (4.0 bhp)
WEIGHT: 9.7 kg (21.4 Ibs.)
: 1400 cc (47.3 oz.)
:
With tube: 900 m3/h (530 )
Without tube: 1490 m3/h (877 )
: 89 m/sec. (199 mph)

I think the things people look at are the “” and the “.” Those are the two things that actually move stuff.

I like getting Stihl equipment. When I do so, I never have to worry about if I just bought junk or not. I know it’s not.

Can You Identify This Tree?

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

I hadn’t taken much notice of it until a friend mentioned it to me a few days ago. He said, “You might want to do yourself a favor and take that down while it’s still small.” Upon later reflection, we noticed it wasn’t a , but most likely a fast growing softwood.

I don’t know about you, but I am not interested in having a fast growing about 30 feet away from the . I remember in my past life, we removed a 20 year old that was about 80 feet tall. I couldn’t believe it when the homeowner told me that.

Since I haven’t figured out what kind of tree it is, I thought I would put it out to you. I know it’s not a Tulip…the are nothing like them. I was thinking it could be a Poplar or an , but the don’t quite fit. Thereare over 40 different types of , so it could be one of them.

If you know what kind of tree this is, please let me know while it’s small enough to cut down and drag into the . I can always replant an Oak in its spot. They seem to be springing up all over the place.

Cleaning Gutters & Installing Amerimax Gutter Covers

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

If you have ever gone through the agonizing process of dealing with , you would certainly know that it’s…well, agonizing.

Here’s one for you. Have you ever realized that every single cover company claims they are the best? It actually gets comical after a while. They all seem to have the “latest ” and all have 100% effectiveness. Wait…some of them go the honest route. They tell you that no cover is 100% effective. They say that you will still have to climb up that at least a few times a year.

Well, what is someone supposed to do when they have to maintain that are about 40′ high? There ain’t no way this old man is getting up there.

It’s the same old story. These are the things I deal with when I move to a new . I guess it’s only been twice now, just try to ignore that. Each time, I go around and figure out what needs to be done. I just do it. I don’t wait. The longer I wait, the more something rots or gets clogged or prices go up. Plus, I like doing these things. I have a certain affinity for “systems.” I like to watch things work. Who else takes of cover installations?

Here is my situation. We have about 136′ of . They are all clogged with oak . There are no . When it rains hard, the fill up and . This makes my face turn red. There are two reasons why I don’t pull out the big 40′ and clean them out right then and there…one being I don’t have that 40′ and two being I don’t like the feeling of lightening running through my body.

The whole reason for is to stop the from pouring down and the sitting against the foundation. This keeps the basement dryer. are very good, but we, as a species, have yet to perfect a cover that stops from filling them up and stopping their functionality. You would be amazed at how few to takes to clog a .

You are lucky I didn’t have this blog when we moved into the other . I went through this whole fiasco then. I would’ve dragged you through it with me. The difference there was the highest was about 14′. That was nothing. If I tried to climb a to reach parts of the here, I probably would get “shaky leg.” If you have ever climbed something high, you know what I am talking about. I remember one time I was at the very top of a 100′ oak tree and my leg started to shake. I guess that’s the body’s way of telling you to get down.

Since I am not about to do the thing here, I decided to call some professionals. I had a cleaning company come over yesterday and they gave me a price of $125 to clean them. That was fair, but the problem is that the cleaning really doesn’t solve the problem. They would have to come at least twice a year. I decided to try to solve the problem. Later on, I called another company, this time, one that installed covers.

Back at the other , I installed “Leaf Relief covers that worked very well. I was, and still am, very happy with them. I put them on when we first moved in and never had to clean them out again. I checked each year and they were spotless. Because of my experience with them, I really want them on this .

I spoke with the other company on the phone. He gave me a price of $7.50 a foot to clean and install the Leaf Relief covers. That wasn’t a horrible price, but about twice as much as the actual costs to install. Weird, isn’t it? I can tell you from experience, covers are really easy to put on and there really isn’t much material to them at all. Why they cost that much to install is beyond me. At that price, this job would be costing at least $1,020. I would pay it if I had to, but I am really trying to find another way.

Since I was making a trip to today anyway, I thought of a great idea. Why not buy some covers from the Depot and install them where I can reach? If I do that, I can at least knock a couple of bucks off the job.

When I got there, I looked through the covers and one type stuck out. It was the Amerimax Home Products 4 Ft. White Solid Cover. These were about $1 per foot and seemed to remind me of a few other big name brands. I thought to myself, “Heck man, what the freak, let’s go for it.” I bought 44′ worth.

There are two spots I can reach on this …one in the back, over the and the other the front of the garage. If I could install the 44′ worth, I would be saving $330. Not bad.

I gotta tell ya, I really like installing covers. Seriously. I cleaned the out and slid these covers up, under the shingles. Then, I clipped the fronts around the lip of the . They were secure after that. I went one step further and screwed two self tapping screws in the front edge of each cover, just to be sure. The screws are rust proof…yeah, that would be a mess.

After I installed them, I got the hose out and sprayed the roof. I watched the slide around the nose of the cover and enter the . What a great feeling it is to hear the running down the downspout. The cool part is watching the “cling” to the as it goes around the bend.

While the first (and cheaper) guy was here, I asked him if he could install the covers if I got them. He agreed, for a price. I am sure I can negotiate a decent price with him to install the rest of the covers. I am pretty sure that he got the impression I am not the type of person that has a cleaning company come over twice a year. As I said, I like to “fix” the problem.

Yard Work - Raking the Leaves is Done

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

I finally finished raking the . There were a lot of them. I can’t say I liked doing this particular job for many reasons. One reason I didn’t care for this activity would be that it wasn’t much fun, with the presence of coming in at a strong second. Apparently, live in old . When you them, instinct tells them to swarm around the closest face they can find. That would be mine. They flew in my eyes, in my ears and one even made it into my mouth. I hope the didn’t see me staggering across the gagging while trying to force the artifact from the back of my throat. Laugh…go ahead.

This is a section of the that is right up against the . It has a cute little area you can sit and read, “Gone With the Wind” (Joe, that’s for you).

This is just a random shot looking up the side yard. I guess I wanted to show that the actually is getting green. I go out and talk to it every day.

Joe, here’s that little area again. Don’t worry, I am going to put nice in there for you.

Now, this is a small area that is right next to the driveway. I am guessing it may have been a vegetable in the past. I decided to replant the from way up on the hill in the front, split them and put them along the driveway. I think they will multiply and fill in nicely. I also am transplanting some other (that I can’t quite identify) as a second row. Then, I am going to get some as a third row and make it reaaal nice.

This is looking up towards the road, from the . Yes, I raked all that out. I plan on getting some more and scattering them around in this area, to fill it in.

Yes, we have the first bloomed . Isn’t she pretty? I really like because they are so easy to take care of.

A quick shot of a Rhododendron in partial .

Just a shot looking down at the .

Ahh, the mailbox again. I know you can’t get enough of this. These are the I was talking about above. I have no idea what they are, but I took them from the hillside and placed some of them around the mailbox. If you know what they are, please let me know. Thank you.

It’s like we are having a mini “.” Check this one out showing its colors. Man, I sure hope this is an Azalea.

And finally, this is the front . I even raked out behind the in the front.

I don’t think I am going to have to endure this much raking again. I plan on getting a back-pack blower to keep things in check. It should be easier next time.

I’m outty.

Installing a New Mailbox

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Yeah, I keep saying I am going to run to to get the mailbox stuff, but I just haven’t found the time yet.

I feel like I’ve been stuck inside for days…wait, that’s because I have been. I am doing so much stuff. Unfortunately, it’s all at the same time. I take breaks to , which, by the way, are all finished in the front. I even a bit. You should have seen the bugs swirling around my head.

I have a list for the next time we go to the Depot. I need a new mailbox. I am thinking green would be nice. I am going to get a nice traditional post, like many others on the road. I am also going to pick up some more Thompson’s Seal (with UV protection). I am going to treat the entire post, from top to bottom. Then, I am going to dig a nice deep hole and actually use cement way down deep. If it’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s having a crooked . I know how they get crooked…it’s because of the snowplows slamming against them all . With my installation, I am going to try to beat the plows.

I also have to get a 5 gallon plastic for the ride-on I plan on getting towards the end of the month. Right now, I only have a push mower and that’s not going to work so well up near the road. The kind offered to mow up in that area when she does hers. I thought that was nice. I explained to her that I really don’t want to be “that guy” who just moved in and now the is too high.

My brother came over yesterday for a visit. He works up North of , so it was only a 28 mile trip for him. I thought that was pretty cool. We went for a walk down into the and then down the trail. Then, we got the dog and walked up the road to the dead end. I wanted to show him all the nice houses. It’s good that he is so close now because we can hang out more. I keep offering to make him dinner, but he wants to keep eating in restaurants. One day…

I am planning on taking down the that is set up near the driveway. I offered it to my brother and he accepted. It’s in very good shape. I’m just wondering how deep that sucker goes into the dirt and how much cement they used as the footing. It may be a long day of digging.

I’ll show you some of the new mailbox when I get it in.

Lots of Raking Leaves Out of Gardens

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

We took another trip to a different town today. We went at in Colchester. Colchester was a pretty neat town, but a little busy for my taste. It was cute with a nice park right off main street. I think it may have seemed busy because rush hour was getting close.

While in , I felt a bit tired. I kept wondering why. Then, I remembered what I had done all morning…raked . By the way, ’s prices were waaay lower than . We got about triple the product for just a little mo’ money. That’s cool with me. I think we are still going to go back to because I like the atmosphere. seemed much more like just buying food to survive. If I am going to go out somewhere, I like to have an “experience.”

Anyway, back to those . Since this propery is a bit larger than our other one, it is taking a little while to get used to. One thing I noticed was that there needs a lot of raking to be done. There are many gardens (which are very nice and right up my alley), but they need a bit of TLC because of the . The good thing is that they have a nice variety of already planted. There isn’t much in the way of running out to the nursery to get new stuff. Yesterday, we went to for some and . I got the , but there was no to be found. When we got home, I noticed there was already scattered throughout the front. They were just kind of buried with .

A few days ago, I decided to it would be best if I picked one area per day to . There is no sense me killing myself and I can always use a nice break from the computer. I already did about three or four areas and things are starting to come together. Today, I did part of the big front and along the front of the .

Believe it or not, this area had three fulls of . One full equals about four loads. Crazy. If you are wondering what the heck a full is, it’s me laying a big on the ground and raking the onto it. When it’s full, I pick it up like a big sack and carry it into the .

The front of the was easier with only one full. I needed to get the away from the because, well, it looks better and I can also get to the foundation for insect spray.

After I am all done getting all the up, I am really going to focus on getting the lawn in order. I already have been doing some stuff, but it needs to be raked and reseeded.

Also, this is the month I get my new ride on . I am planning on this towards the end of the month, so there maybe one tough day with the push mower.

Trees Blooming in May

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

I took a few photos of the this morning. Every year, I like to take of the trees in the area. I do this, because every year, I forget when the heck the come out. It’s kind of like a journal…or a log…or a web log…oh wait, a BLOG. That was funny.

Anyway, since it was so wonderfully beautiful this morning, I decided to drink my coffee on the back . One really big reason it was wonderful is because there were no bugs flying around my head yet. You should’ve seen me trying to up some yesterday evening. Whoa…it was like I was in a boxing match. I am sure the was laughing. I put on some “Off” and it did nothing. What is it with the bugs this year? I think I may be stirring them up by raking.

It seems like the are taking a reaaaaaly long time to here. It may because there are virtually no . They are all oaks and they take longer. I bet County looks totally like right now. Maybe with some more warm sunny days, things will start looking greener around here.

As I was sitting on the back , I noticed a little bird land on our . I thought it was odd, because there was actually in the feeder. Do you know what that means? It means that the haven’t figured out where it is yet. If they had, it would be empty. I think I am going to just keep walking around quietly to keep the thing under their radar. Everyone knows what happens when a finds a . That’s the end of that. are on Laura’s “nemesis” list. For an animal lover, I have never seen such darkness in her eyes…

The First Snow in Our Little New York

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

This is getting pretty bad. I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. I noticed there was on the ground and immediately thought about writing a blog post about it. Yes, I probably should pursue therapy.

In any event, yes, it did last night. It was the first of the season for us in this part of New York. It actually hasn’t been cold really and there are still on the trees…green ones on some. That strikes me as weird. Laura keeps telling me they are on the trees until after . It’s nice to have a little brain so closeby.

When I woke up in the middle of the night, there was more on the ground. I guess some of it melted. I have to say, the sight of does give you a nice feeling. With all the commercials on TV these days, it is starting to feel like the season. Also, just a word of warning, these are the days that I start dreaming. These are the days of reflection on what I want to do with the rest of my life. I probably think this way because calms me down and gives me some breathing room.

We have had the burning for most of the month of November and some of . I am so happy we got this stove. It’s clean and very easy to operate. Gone are the days of splitting wood, dust and a mess in the . I don’t think I will ever forget all the bark in the living room when I was a kid. I did like burning it though.

October is Still Green

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

Although I have been noticing a lot more color in the trees around here, I would have to say that for 7, it’s still pretty green.

I ran down to this morning to return a dying and White Pine. Just in case you were curious, I traded them for three nice China Girl Hollys. Since I am planting them late in the season, I hope they don’t have the same fate as last year’s Hollys. Anyway, during the trip to the store, I noticed a lot of falling on this back road that I like to take. I pulled over and took a picture. Then the camera went dead. Good thing I got a pic.

Oh, and just in case you were curious, the winter damaged Holly from last year did grow new this year. Here is a photo…

new-growth-holly.jpg

There isn’t much new growth, but there are . Maybe next season there will be new growth.

Below is a photo of a new China Girl Holly that I just got today. See the new sprouts up on top? That’s what I like to see. Even my Boxwoods are sprouting with new growth. I guess they do that late in the season.
