Fife’n Drum and Bull’s Bridge, Kent, CT

Monday, March 24th, 2008

I know that I have told you in the past how much Laura and I like to eat lunch at the Fife’n Drum in , every . We have been doing it now for about four years. It usually is a very . Well, unfortunately, yesterday was our last visit to this .

I am going to try to keep this short and sweet and not too much like a critic. Let’s just say that it seems like there is some and a new chef at this place.

The wait was very long during each portion of our two course lunch and the was amateur at best. It seemed like the dude was back there too. I swear it seemed like there were parts of my that were from a can. To me, “” does not mean that tasted like it was straight from . A does not mean boiled . Oh well, there’s $80 down the drain. We didn’t even stay for …my favorite part. We just left the on the table and left. During the last 20 minute wait to have our plates cleared from the table, three different walked by and looked at us at least . We kept wondering if our had gone home. Well, as it turns out, as we were leaving, Laura caught sight of this guy eating at the bar. What the hell? If you can’t tell, I am a little annoyed. To think, I still left a tip…A TIP. I didn’t have the to wait for any change. I swear, if we had stayed any longer, they would’ve started vacuuming the floor while people were still eating. Yes, we will have to find a new place to eat on .

To simmer down, we went on our traditional hike at Bull’s Bridge. I have a few posts about our previous hikes. It’s a really .

Since we have been down the same trail so many times, I thought it would be a good idea to check out the top part of the trails. Laura might have been a little disappointed because she wanted to go on a real hike. I will have to make it up to her. We took lots of and . I will upload the today and post it here.

These are some old of a time when Laura and I went on the Appalachian Trail near Bull’s Bridge, , .

As my old post said, we like to go to dinner every at Fife’n Drum in . Afterwards, we go on the trial just for a few miles. It’s nothing huge, but it is fun.

A few years ago, I got some of some crazy people down the . Also, there was a big raft doing some white action. It was a good show. I just keep thinking how cold it was.

Thanksgiving at the Red Lion Inn

Wow, what a night. Laura and I had a great dinner at the Red Lion Inn in , .

This is becoming quite the tradition with us. I while back, Laura and I decided to start a new tradition of going out to eat at different inns and located in different parts of…the area. Apparently, we have developed a few favorites.

I remember the first one we went to. It was New Year’s Eve. We went to the Hudson House in Cold , . Since then, we have been to the Red Lion Inn in , , the Village Inn in , , Old Drovers Inn in Plains, , Fife’n Drum in , , Bar, Barnaby’s in and a few others I can’t remember. We really like the tradition.

Last night’s dinner was great. I was so nice to see the entire dining room full of people all dressed up. Of course, Laura and I looked marvelous, as usual.

Here’s a picture of the Inn at night…

Hiking at Bull’s Bridge - Kent, CT

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Every , Laura and I try to go to dinner at “Fife’n Drum” in Kent, CT and then down at Bull’s Bridge. This has become a little tradition for us. It gives us something to look forward to during this time of year.

Yesterday was pretty fun. We got into and took .343 down to , . 343 has some of the nicest houses on it! I just love to look at those places…horse farms and all that. Reminds me of one day in the future when I will sit with my feet up laughing at my past.

We took a bunch of back roads all the way into , . We made it to Fife’n Drum about a half hour late, but the dude let us in anyway. The people over there in are a little different than the people that we live near. I am not sure they would put up with the barking dog my neighbor has. Yeah, they seem like the kind of people that might have a little problem with that, if you catch my drift.

Dinner was good, even though it was at 2PM. The thing that makes this day so much fun, is that we get to go down at Bull’s Bridge after dinner.

Bull’s Bridge is a little covered wooden bridge right off .7. The bridge is nice, but the is nicer. There is part of the Appalachian Trail right next to it.

We go all the way down to a small campground. I think it’s called 10 Mile Campground or something. It’s about a mile down the trail. There is so much to look at along the way…like an overlook and rapids and all that. It’s pretty damn cool.

We spent a few hours and then came back to head up to Laura’s parents house for some . Overall, I would have to say it was a rather enjoyable day. Enjoy the pics!

Our Trip to Lakeville, CT

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006

I have been holding on to this post for a while. As you may have noticed from , Laura and I like to skirt the border of and . There are some pretty cool areas along the line. Every time we go there, we see something new. This time, I wanted to head up and , to enjoy the drive.

Now, just to give you a , the / is the most Northwest part of . If you drive north from into and look to your left, you will see the . Don’t be fooled by these tree-filled looking …there is tons of stuff to do in there. One day, a while back, we drove for about 10 miles down a on the very top of the . We had no idea where we were, but couldn’t turn around because the road was so thin. Good thing another car wasn’t coming in the opposite direction. We passed so many and a few much hidden resorts. We finally headed down a paved road and popped out right in . It’s a very cute town, so that’s why I wanted to go back and visit the area. I am not sure I would be able to find the road back up into the today…that’s how well it was hidden. We visited this area towards the end of the trip.

We started out by heading up .7 in …past , Sherman and , where we stopped for a at Kent Falls State Park.

kent_falls_ct.jpg

I used to visit Falls when I was a kid, but like so many other things we do when we are kids, the memory was a bit blurry. I wanted to visit again. This is a great park to visit with kids. They can run around and create of in the front field and then everyone can walk to the top of the falls on very woodsy . It’s not a very far hike, but quite scenic. Make sure to bring your camera.

We continued North on .7 and quickly made a visit into over the , which is very cute.

The great thing about driving through is that they take very good care of their covered bridges. This was a very small, but functional town, although it is quite a distance from a major store or mall. Back on the road, we came across an area that reminded me of why I like this area so much…its beauty.

ct_road.jpg

People travel out West to see the beauty of the landscape and forget about what is right in their backyard.

limerock_park_ct.jpg

If you have never been to Lime Rock Park, you should really make it a destination. There is a really cool race track with lots of turns and a straightaway. You can watch motorcycles and many different types of cars racing around the track. There are even days where you can bring your own car or bike there to get timed. It’s pretty exciting. The last time I went, I was with my cousin Joe and we just chilled on the lawn watching the cars all afternoon. The best part is that this park is very casual. You pull in, park and walk to the spot you want to sit yourself for the rest of the day.

A few miles past Lime Rock is the “Lake” in . It is called Lake Wononscopomuc. Say that 3 times fast…or once for that matter.

lake_wononscopomus_2.jpg

We had to pull in here to check it out. There was no one swimming at the lake today due to the clouds, but we were really interested in how a place this nice gets paid for up here where the population is pretty low. I walked inside the building to talk to someone. A woman inside explained to me that since there were many people from City who had summer houses here, there was good tax revenue generated for the town. Also, there are a few private schools in the area that bring in some . She was actually pretty excited to tell me about how the native residents get all of the good benefits and great schools for their children paid for by out-of-towners. Seemed like a good deal to me. There were some really nice houses up here in this area…

lakeville_ct_house.jpg

On the way out of the lake area, we noticed a really interesting called “West Main.”

west_main_sign.jpg

west_main_restaurant_lakeville_ct.jpg

This really has nothing to do with our trip, but thought it would be cool to show you what you can do with an old school house looking building.

After spending some time in , we started to head home taking .41 into , and through Union, on to .22 South.

If you decide to take a trip like this, make sure you bring your camera, plenty of and a good map. It will most likely take all day, but will be worth the drive!
