Why English isn’t the only language you should know
Although English is spoken by almost 500 million people around the world, it is impossible to deny how countries such as China, Japan, Russia and India are becoming increasingly important, both in the world of politics and the world of business. Here are some reasons to expand your horizon and learn a new language.
Google: $500,000,000,000 company by 2010?
At the end of 2009, Microsoft would have a market value of about $405 billion and Google’s would be roughly $370 billion. So Google would surpass Microsoft sometime in 2010. If its stock kept appreciating at 34 percent clip annually compared to Microsoft’s 12.5 percent, Google would finish 2010 with a market value of nearly half a trillion dollars.

This is getting rather entertaining. Well, I think it’s entertaining because nothing beyond some sites losing PageRank has happened yet. I don’t think anyone has lost any traffic. One thing is for sure, there are more than a few people who have lost faith in the whole PageRank thing.
I was reading this great article today called, “Google Drops PageRank For Many Sites : Paid Links or New Algorithm?” It’s a pretty good read.
Take a look at the article and click on some of the links in it. Ones like WashingtonPost.com and Forbes.com. What’s really interesting is their new PageRank. They are now “5″ and “4″ respectively. What happened there? My own blog lost a point and is now a 5. So, does that mean that I am right up there with WashingtonPost? I think not. WashingtonPost has 64,300 backlinks. Ok, there goes that relationship.
There are a lot of theories out there on what happened. I think, if you are interested in the whole thing, you should start looking at the sites that gained PageRank and not the ones who lost. That’s where you are going to find some answers.
PS - Some say that “Google PR” stands for “Public Relations.” If so, Google is doing a mighty good job of it. They are succeeding at dangling the carrot out there. If you follow that logic, you would think that bloggers would be rewarded with the whole PageRank thing, instead of being the main ones hit with the latest update.

I was reading again about the whole Google PageRank thing (which is getting rather nausiating) and came across a fun blog post called, “Six Common Punctuation Errors that Bedevil Bloggers.”
I try to proof read my posts, but I am sure that I make mistakes. The best ones are the ones that I don’t even know I make. I know that I use the “…” a lot. I am always sure to put the punctuation inside the end quote. I think I do a pretty good job with commas. People might disagree with that one because they don’t get how I write. Basically, I put a comma where I pause when I speak. I guess I write in spoken English. From what I have heard, people seems to like that.
Anyway, if you think you need to clean up your act…or your posts, you might want to take a look at the link above. If nothing else, it will make you feel smarter.
PS - Here is one I absolutely love. It’s when people use “I” incorrectly, such as, “Jeff and I at the mall.” or “Look at Jeff and I.” I think the whole “I” thing has been pummeled into people’s heads way too much.

The other day, I noticed that my Google PageRank on this blog lost a point and is now a 5. I scratched my head and thought to myself that it was kind of expected. I know that I haven’t been writing too much lately as I try to figure out some business stuff.
I was just checking out my Uncle Bob’s blog and noticed that his PageRank jumped a point and is now a 7. Ahhh…the good days are over. Well, for me anyway.
The actual Google PageRank isn’t the thing that gets to me…it’s the competition of the whole thing. Not that I am competing with him, per se, but I am competing with every other website on the planet.
My search engine rankings aren’t affected by my PageRank and my traffic certainly isn’t either. So why do I care? Who knows. It’s probably a guy thing.
I am wondering why I suffered from Google’s last PageRank update and Bob flourished. I guess if I think about it for a second I can figure it out. Let’s look at the differences between the two sites -
1. His is mostly on topic and mine is all over the place. You can see this from my two million categories.
2. He writes frequent posts. Lately, I have gotten out of the habit.
3. He write long posts, most of the time. Only sometimes do I write long posts. I tend to use a lot of pictures.
4. He has a fairly loyal audience of readers who comment often. I have a smaller audience of loyal readers who comment not as often.
5. His comments are long. Mine are good, but not as long.
6. I tend to give away links to brand new sites with 0 PageRank. I don’t think that matters, because I trust those sites.
7. His readers may be slightly more tech savvy than mine in that they may have bookmarked his blog in their Google Toolbar Bookmarks.
8. He is smarter than me, but I don’t think that has anything to do with it.
So does this even matter, beyond my own ego? A lot of people are saying it doesn’t.
I tend to agree with them, but I can’t say that I’m still not a little hurt.

Ummm…yeah, I think I can help you out with that. This is an easy one. Whether you have an online business or a “brick and mortar” one, there are a few places online that can get you the exposure you are looking for.
The first place to start advertising is online classifieds. Here are some very popular ones, depending on your niche…
- Pet Classifieds
- Free Classifieds
- Motorcycle Classifieds
- Boat Classifieds
- Auto Classifieds
Now remember, more than one of these websites above might be right for you. Feel free to advertise on the ones that fit your business.
A second great place to get the word out about your business is an article submission website. The reason these types of websites are so effective is because the articles are written by you. You can include whatever you want, such as a description of your business, what you offer, address and phone number, website, etc…You get the picture.
The last (for this post) great place to advertise your business is in a business directory, of course. There are tons of people out there every day searching for businesses close to their homes. They remember the business name, but not the phone number or address. They search Google or Yahoo! and type in only what they remember. Chances are, if you listed your business in an online business directory, you will appear and get that phone call you are looking for.
Until next tiime and good luck.

I just might be the last known web dude on the planet to notice this, but the Microsoft Live Search link command is officially offline. Boy do I feel like a loser.
I was checking some backlinks today and read a little note on MarketLeap’s website that said…
*Important Announcement!
MSN has recently discontinued reporting results for the operator 'link:'. As such, our Link Popularity tool is no longer able to report MSN results. More information regarding their decision is available on the MSN blog.
Well, wouldn’t ya know, I strolled over to MSN’s blog and took a look at the “We are flattered, but…” post. Mind you, this post was written in March. Where the hell have I been?
So basically, here is a key line of the post…
We have been seeing broad use of these features by legitimate users but unfortunately also what appears to be mass automated usage for data mining.
Hmmm, Yahoo! and Google and other search engines still offer advanced query syntax, such as “link:, linkdomain: and inurl:,” or some variation thereof.
Now, MSN can do anything they want and I am not somebody who is going to complain about Windows and Microsoft and all that. I sincerely hope I am beyond that, not that I was ever into it. I am just saying, “look around.” Many people who use that advanced query syntax are acedemics, webmasters and programmers. Those are the exact people you want on your side. How much $$$ has Google made off of AdWords? Gee, who was Google’s first target market for AdWords and AdSense? Man, it doesn’t take a genious to figure out that they are the ones you should be catering to and that they can be very vocal on the internet. I gotta say, it takes a bold person to take away one of the very tools that a very important market uses quite often. Oh well, I suppose I will just have to get used to Google’s and Yahoo!’s tools that they continue to offer.
