Ford Mustang Mach 1 - Priming the Sheet Metal

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Jeff sent me a few photos of the most recent transition of his 1970 . I have been a very bad brother and haven’t posted them. I blame my selfish greed for this. I will try to do better in the future.

Ok, so here they are…

The Difference in Tire Ratings

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Tomorrow, I have an appointment with a local tire service center to replace the on my car. When I purchased the car (1998 - V6), I think it had around 76,000 miles on it. The weren’t the greatest, so I had them changed. The ones I got were 50,000 mile .

Well, as it turns out, I didn’t end up being the greatest tire rotator, so I can feel flat spots in the now. The car currently has about 147,000 miles on it, so I don’t feel too bad.

Earlier this week, I pulled into the tire place and a nice guy walked out to me with a clip board. I thought this was kind of nice. He was quite friendy. I told him what I was looking for and he wrote down the tire size, rating and all that stuff. He noticed that the car currently had “H” rated , yet the car called for “V” rated . That’s the speed rating. We went inside and picked out the new that I wanted. They have to order them, so my appointment is Friday.

I was asking the person inside about what the rating meant. She didn’t have the greatest response, so I looked here. This has some helpful information, but I am still looking for more. “Speed Rating” doesn’t help much.

I found an article called,”The Truth About Performance Tires” that helped somewhat. The website says, “This “V” meant the tire had been safely tested in the laboratory to stay together at speeds up to 149 mph. Thus, the modern day high performance tire was introduced in America.” If you read the article, you can get a feel of what the other ratings mean, such as “H,” “S” and “Z” ratings.

The “V” rated is equipped to handle speeds up to 149 MPH. I am very happy to hear that because I have always thought something was holding me back in that car.

Replacing Rear Brake Rotors and Pads - 1998 Honda Accord

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

If I had to guess, which I do, which replacement part of a car is most overlooked, I would say the rear brakes. I say this because I always overlook them. I do this probably because the front do something like 70% of the braking action. I have changed the front on almost all of my .

The problem with only replacing the front and is that you are leaving the rears with compromised braking ability, meaning, the rear aren’t doing their jobs as much as they should be. What does this cause? Well, it causes increased stress on the front resulting in faster wear on the pads and higher heat on the , which equals warping. I guess the moral of this story is to make sure you replace your rear and from time to time. This will save you money in the long run.

Gee, if I only had followed my own advice, my rear wouldn’t have looked like this…

rear-brake-rotor.jpg

Yes, that’s mine. I did the back last evening. Look at the small shiny area where the pads were actually touching the rotor.

I will go over this for only one tire, since the other side was identical. First, I pulled off the tire. Then, I had to drill out the two small screws holding on the rotor. Once that was done, I took off the caliper and then the piece that holds the caliper on to the spindle. I had to do this because that piece wrapped around the rotor. I had no choice. Everything was pretty easy to take off, except for those two rotor screws. I had to scrape some gunk off some existing parts to make it easier to put on the new parts, but everything went smoothly. I would say that the whole thing took about an hour.

Believe it or not, my least favorite part about working on my car is carrying the jack from the basement to the driveway.

Stripping the Roof - 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Here goes…

The rear photos were taken on June 2, 2007. Now, the entire rear is welded together. The roof is also stripped to bare metal so it shines in the sun.

The front photo was taken today, June 19, 2007. The front aprons and firewall are completely stripped and ready for epoxy primer.

A Noise Coming From My Front Brakes

Friday, June 1st, 2007

For a few weeks now, I have been hearing a sort of a “grinding” noise coming from the front of my car. It’s not too loud of a noise, but a noise none-the-less.

I try to keep my car in tip-top shape. I learned a long time ago that if you let the maintenance of your vehicle get too far ahead of you, everything will seem to break at the same time. Let me give you a little background…I drive a 1998 Honda Accord. It has a V6. There, that’s the background.

The noise only seems to happen when I turn to the left. I have known since the beginning that this is the worn brake pad rubbing against the brake rotor. Here, you can find a nice short course on how brakes work. What strikes me is that I just changed the whole front system (pads and ) not too long ago. Well, it seems like not too long ago. When Paul and I went out to lunch yesterday, he told me it was the front wheel bearing. I told him that it was the , but he didn’t want to listen. Today, I turned to the left and pumped the . The noise came and went and Paul finally agreed that I was correct. Sometimes it takes a little arm twisting with Paul.

Anyway, a few days ago, I visited my favorite online car part website to purchase new front brake and front . This website has some pretty good prices. Here is an example…I got the and pads for about $70. The shipping was free because the order was over $49.99. Now, that sure beats taking the car to the mechanic!!!

Basically, your car is stripped down and looking very uninspiring…then comes the quarter panels. It can make a real difference in the way the car looks.

Here are some photos of the left quarter panel getting glued and welded on the 1970 . The quarter panel was made by Dynacorn and purchased at Mustangs Unlimited in CT.

1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 - Bodywork

Friday, May 11th, 2007

Well someone was pretty busy yesterday. I think Jeff is a very happy man, now that he has somewhere to post all his photos and brag about all his hard work. Anyway, here are a few more photos of yesterday’s work:

- The driver’s side door was temporarily hung on vehicle to check for proper fit.
- Remember yesterday’s photo of the rusty lower lock pillar? Well, nice and new now. The rust was removed and a patch was welded on and ground smooth. Any imperfections were filled.
- The rear trunk floor crossmember was bonded and welded, and
- The left rear frame underside was completed

Here is a photo of that previously rusty center pillar plate…

1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 - Door Skin Replacement

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

More work completed on Jeff Gaulard’s 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1.

The photos of the rust hole on the lower lock pillar was cut out and a patch panel welded in on May 3rd. I will post a “completed” photo in the next post.

The photos of the door skin replacement was done on May 5th – 6th. Jeff got the skin from Mustangs Unlimited in Manchester CT. I will upload a photo of the completed door fitted to the car in the next post.

The photos of the left rear floor pan are from today, May 9th. He adhesively bonded the panel in yesterday and welded it in place today giving about 24 hours for the adhesive to dry. It is 3m panel bonding adhesive. You don’t want to glue your tools to the floor by accident because chanches are you wont get them off. The weld seams were ground down and filled over with Polyester Rage Extreme.

The rear frame rails were coated on the inside prior to the floor replace with internal rust inhibitor. This was applied with a 3 foot spray wand.
