Gaulard Web Services is Hiring - Writer Wanted

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Well, you would actually be an .

I already have two people helping me out these days. They manage all the , which is nice because it loosens me up to run the . It has worked out very well so far. Now I need to take the next step. I am looking for someone (preferably an major) who LOVES to write and do research. The main words are and . This person must be able to write better than me, because if they can’t, I might as well do it all myself. I would love to read something this person writes and give them a pat on the back and say job well done. This person needs to be thinking about what they are going to write the next day while they are laying in bed falling asleep. Have you ever turned the light back on to take notes so you wouldn’t forget that great idea? Yeah, that’s what I’m talkin’ about.

If you don’t know me, I am going to let you in on a little secret. I am kind of hard to please. I do many things related to myself and have gotten very good at them. It’s rare that I come across someone who knocks my socks off. When it comes to , I notice all the missing commas and off . It’s not easy noticing all this stuff, but that’s the way momma raised me.

Anyway, if you, or anyone you know is looking for some cold, hard cash and is an , please let me know. You are going to need to send me samples of your work so I can look at them. It would be fantastic if you knew all about keywords and how to write for the web. It would also be fantastic if you were a major (as well as an major) who has experience with the web.

A New Computer - What Should I Get?

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

This one is for those people out there who know about . When people are searching for a new , they usually ask me what to get. I say something like, “I design , what the heck do I know about ?” That usually gets some mean look and the person walks away. I haven’t been known for my bright attitude at times.

Well, I usually do ok, but I am getting a little tired of . I want my next one to last. I bought the one I am working on about 6 months ago. I am going to keep this one for something, but I need a monster. Here is the issue…I work with tons of . One of my sites has 59,000 image that I need to copy/paste, delete, move, whatever. That’s just one example. I also have very large that I need to open/close, etc… My problem isn’t the need for to run huge or for , I just need something for big, and lots of . Uploads and downloads are my middle names. I have been working on getting the fastest available and now my has become my PC.

Here is what I am thinking:

- T7400 Workstation
- Quad Core Intel® Xeon® Processor E5405 (2.00GHz,2X6M L2,1333) (Do I need a 2nd processor?)
- Genuine ® , with Media (I’m willing to move on from . Plus, actually puts the in , like I never got to do. Big power savings.)
- 3 Year ProSupport for End Users and 3 Year NBD On-site Service (This is important because I want someone in this house if the breaks.)
- 256MB PCIe x16 nVidia NVS 290, DVI Capable ( I know absolutely nothing about cards.)
- 4GB, DDR2 SDRAM FBD , 667MHz, ECC (4 DIMMS) (I want more.)
- C23 All SAS drives, RAID 5, 3 drive total configuration ( I also know nothing about RAID. I basically want the speed of SAS drives, the speed of two drives working together and the of a third drive. I don’t know the difference between and RAID 5.)
- Three 146GB SAS Hard Drives, 1 inch (15,000 rpm) (How much faster are SAS drives than SATA drives?)
- PERC6/i SAS/SATA RAID Card - For Connecting Internal Hard Drives
- Dell 1505 Wireless-N PCIe Card

So there you have it. I already have a monitor, so that’s cool. I think I can save a few bucks by switching out the SAS drives for SATA drives. It depends on what I find out about them. I want more RAM, but didn’t see the option for more. I am wondering about another processor and the card.

Well, any advice? Am I missing anything?

Comcast Business Class Cable Internet

I am not sure if I previously mentioned this or not, but I am now in need of class service, because I now require a .

The guys from just left. They switched our services from residential TV, cable and to just residential TV and cable and now . They did a bunch of stuff, but the main thing was to set up another downstairs, alongside the old one and the .

I already see a speed increase with downloading my . I just happen to be in the middle of a big download, and strangely enough, the connection didn’t break…it just got faster. I have yet to set up the to work with the static IP, but have found the support page that tells me how to do it. We are going out for a little while and I’ll give it a shot when we get back.

One thing I am going to do is the create a screen capture of the original settings, just in case I screw up. I am also going to have Hannigan’s number on hand. Hopefully he is familiar with Linksys .

Buying and Selling Domain Names

Friday, March 21st, 2008

The more I look around, the more I learn that the is big .

As I told you yesterday, I am trying to scoop up a bunch of different extensions for the I already have. It’s working out pretty well, but I have hit a little bump. I already bought up most of the available ones and now I have to enter the market of second (or third) hand . That is when it gets expensive.

Let me give you a little example…a guy called me a few years ago to offer a .com domain that he was . This was a hot name and he was looking for $50,000 for it. I almost started laughing when he told me that. I think I offered him $300 and went off and did something else. As it turns out, I am kicking myself. I have a feeling I am going to be seeing this domain in action soon because someone out in just purchased it at for $135,000. Why was, or is, it worth so much? Well, it was first registered in 1996, so it has some age. Also, it rolls off the tongue extremely easily and is two very powerful keywords. It’s also quite descriptive. Those things alone give it a lot of value. I talked to the seller last night and he mentioned that he does have another .com for sale that I would be interested in. He wants $50,000 for it. This one is definitely not worth what the other one was, but it does give me pause. Honestly, if you can get a well known .com that was born back in 1996, $50,000 is not too much. You do need to do a little research first.

Yesterday, I put a bunch of bids in for multiple .com and .net addresses. I did receive an back telling me I could buy a .net for $2,688. I am going to have the name appraised today to see if it has been blacklisted or anything like that. I believe it was first registered back in 2002, which isn’t bad.

What’s the benefit of a used ? The answer is . likes “aged” . You can set up a site and not have to wait for ’s filter to do its thing. Also, there may be to the domain already. So basically, if you get a used domain, you could set up a site and have it indexed very quickly to start making fast.

I am going to buy a few more today and then call it quits for a while. The guy I spoke to last night is also looking for $50,000 for a little known extension that will become very popular. This is for the same domain as I was talking about above.

What I do know is this…if I buy a bunch of these names now and sit on them for a few years and let them age, I can send them to and sell them for some $$$. From what I have been learning, I do have quite an investment already. Just remember…if you are going to get into this, you need to buy that people will actually want in a few years. I am not sure how many people would be interested in jaygaulard. There are also huge price variations with what the name consists of, like one word, two words, hyphens, etc…

Today Certainly is Another Day

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Today was another busy day. I spent a good majority of the day organizing things online. I would tell you what they are, but I have this thing about telling people my secrets. Oh well. I will say that I find it simply amazing that I am able to wake up every morning of my life and work on the for at least eight hours straight. Mind you, those are the days I have nothing to do. Oh, I just love looking at the clock as it reads 3PM and realizing that I have been sitting here since 7AM.

As I get older, I find myself focusing on my “physical” self more than I used to. I always try to sit up straight in my chair, so I don’t get a bad posture, like I have been warned about when I was a kid. I also recognize that I need exercise these days. When I say need, I mean “need.” I mean, I am in good shape, but as anyone gets older, I think they become more aware of these things. I also feel my eyes going to hell. When I was a kid, I used to pride myself on not wearing glasses. Well, the years of staring at this monitor has taken its toll, I’m afraid. Last year, I bought glasses to help take the strain off my eyes. These days, I find myself having to focus a heck of a lot more. I can actually feel my eyes getting tired. People say that you should get up every so often to give your eyes a break. They say that you should look out the window every once in a while so your eyes can focus on something else, other than your screen. I do that, but I am just hoping that one day I will make enough to pay someone to do my work for me as I sit in a chair behind them, telling them what to do.

So, what’s new in life…I guess it’s just day to day stuff. As I work, the cats take their turns using my lap as their bed. I am not working on adding any more to my portfolio…well, I had to pop a new one in there, I just couldn’t help myself. This is the year of . I haven’t focused on that portion of the all that much in the past few years, so it might be something I should do to boost the $$$. I believe I can do a very good job with that in the next ten months.

I also have been making , if you haven’t noticed. I think it’s a pretty rewarding thing to do. Paul came over to pick up ten bottles for a party he is having tomorrow. He is going to get back to me with the consensus. I hope he likes them.

Since I have been in college, I have been looking for the perfect place to live. Where we are living now isn’t perfect, by any meaning of the word. As my mother would say, we have decided to hate it. It’s painful to realize that, but it’s true. I have learned that it’s pretty useless looking on the for that perfect town. All it takes is one lousy picture of a town to ruin everything. On to the next perfect town with that one lousy picture, and so on. I think the only way I am going to make it is to get an “anchor” house somewhere up north, with another smaller home in the heat for weekends in the . I have also learned that the perfect town may not even exist anymore. Back in the day, there was a quiet little main street somewhere in Indiana that you could walk up and down for the rest of your life. Now, you have to worry about tornadoes and the Wal-Mart they are putting up at the end of the block. You might think I’m kidding, but look around. The most pristine places are very unaffordable. So the quest goes on.

On Monday, Laura and I are making a trip to Washington, CT. We are going to have lunch at the Mayflower Inn. A few years ago, my mother got us a gift certificate for the Inn that we used for a perfect Valentine’s Day dinner. It was one of the nicest places on earth. We were thrilled with the little antique town, but it was kind of dark on our way in. We really want to see it during the day. You would be surprised what the hills have to offer, for a price. I’ll let you know how it goes. YouTube certainly needs a or two of Washington, CT.

It just started snowing. Laura proposed another walk in the snow. Who am I to say no? I have a feeling I will be putting my boots on at midnight again. I do want to say that I am getting a little tired of the . Every time I think the driveway will be clear for a few days, it snows. I admit that it keeps things exciting, but enough already. It’s been a snowy . The next week looks warmer with the temperatures above freezing. Also, the sunset is much later now, so that January depression has lifted. Now, the sun is going down close to 6PM. In March, we set the clocks ahead, so that should be fun. I am going to try to really soak up the seasons this , and . I think they are worth it.

Wow, what a post. This might actually be what are for. I guess I have to write some real stuff when I am not busy things and about them. Hey look…it’s another on my lap. I think they are doing laps now. This one is Sexy Boo.

Why Can’t America Vote Right?

Democracy in America is in trouble. For some reason we can’t figure out how to cast votes and count them without blunders, inaccuracy and stupidity. Worst of all, a consensus seems to be forming that or electronic ballots are to blame, and that the solution is paper-based . Here’s my proposal.

Business Hosting and Beyond - Website Migration

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

If there is one thing I have learned from doing this thing all these years, it is to work with the best companies out there. The problem is, they are kind of a pain in the tush to find. You are bound to get involved with the wrong companies here and there. I sure did.

Today was another day spent transferring two of my over to my new company. By the way, this is called migration. It’s not the most difficult thing in the world to do, but it can take some time if the site is large. At this point in my life, I am very good at it.

I woke up this morning and decided to optimize a few databases that were left on one particular of mine. One database was rather large…I mean huge. It was a little over 750MB. That’s pretty big. When I began my process, the page hung…the database was too big. This, in turn, took the off line. I called support at the wickedly horrible web company (the one I have been moving away from) and couldn’t get through, twice. Then, I called a third time and got through to the Philippines. I swear I have nothing again the Philippines, but I vow to never knowingly do with a company who uses them for customer support. They are all very nice people. The issue lies with the company not giving these customer support people any authority to do anything on their own. If they are just going to be working the telephone and passing the issues through to the real support department, why not just use the real support department to start off with? I have a real feeling many of these companies are actually losing by outsourcing their support. That support is enough to drive even the most regular person nuts.

This morning, when the (yes, the entire ) went down and I finally got through, I explained the problem. I told the girl to reboot the machine. She continued to troubleshoot by reading off her little card. I tried to tell her again just to reboot the machine, when she put me on hold. I waited for about ten minutes when I realized that the same scenario from a few months ago was actually happening again. I decided to hang up the phone and just transfer the sites over to the real company. That, my friend, was the best investment I have ever made. It saved my sanity and saved my hair.

Well, the transfer process is almost complete. The DNS of both sites still has to resolve, but things are looking up. One of the only issues left to deal with is the data loss. I was forced to use my own database …one from January 2 and one from December 16. So, if you placed any ads on any of my in the past two weeks, please re-register and replace your ads. My apologies.

Here is one word of wisdom for you if you are in this line of - no matter how much your company tells you they do , backup your databases and yourself to your own . The last time this happened with this company, I was informed that they had no database backup. Nope, they just didn’t and I suppose I would have to travel to the Philippines to argue about it.

Upgrading to Outlook 2007

Friday, November 16th, 2007

I have had this on my to-do list for a few weeks.

The other day, I ran up to Staples and grabbed the latest version of Microsoft Outlook. I wanted to upgrade because my previous version, Outlook , was becoming a little buggy since I got Windows Vista. On the calendar, instead of showing one appointment, it would display one for every year that has passed. If I put one appointment in the calendar in January of 2000 to happen every year, there would be two of them in 2001 and so on.

I also upgraded to because I couldn’t find an alternative program that would easily sync with my Treo 700. That is all I use it for…contact, tasks and calendar.

It’s pretty good. Things seem kind of slow on it though. I am sure there are many more features in this version, most of which I will never see, because I don’t use it for .

The Importance of Online Reviews

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

I usually always look at the when it comes to something online from Circuit City, Amazon or someplace like that. These reviews have a huge impact on my decision. I guess I read them because they are in my face. They are usually on every single product page.

The problem is, I don’t usually do all that much research when it comes to very important things, like my . I mean, I do my fair share of reading, but I miss some things. Let’s look at an example. Say I am interested in a new car. Let’s say that I spend a month or two looking at all the possible features and price of the car, but totally forget to look at who is actually making the car. I may very well end up with a crappy car maker with tons of features. What good is the car and it’s features if it stops working altogether?

Due to this realization, I have decided to take another look at all of my vendors. I am now most interested in product support, product quality and reputation, as well as other things. Support is way up there on the list. I really am the kind of guy who needs someone at the other end of the phone line at 3AM on a Sunday. I really am. I am willing to pay more for it.

So, there you have it. I am a review madman now. It is just unfortunate when I come across poor reviews on companies I currently work with. Oh well, I guess there are a few contracts I am going to have to eat.

To live and learn.

Boy, I’m Tired

Friday, October 19th, 2007

I am absolutely exhausted.

I have been working at home for most of the week. A few weeks ago, one of my servers went down. It was down for about 60 hours, which means three of my classifieds were down as well. I couldn’t wait for the lousy support (more about that later) to kick in to reboot the machine, so I initiated a new lease on a new in my company’s brand new data center. I spent a huge amount of time and effort switching multiple between the four I have now. After I was done, I took a nice breath and sat back. I thought I was done.

Well, a few days ago, one of the brand new went down. That one was quickly restarted to work just fine. The other brand new has been giving me trouble ever since. Up…down…all with absolutely the worst support I have ever had to endure in my life. I can walk to the Philippines faster than I can get one of these people to actually fix my problem.

Well, it has come to my attention that one gets what one pays for, especially when it comes to website hosting companies. It was explained to me that the commodity item is the actual and of the operation, with the expense coming from the people. A company can offer the most state of the art equipment for lease, but if it needs a restart or if there is a issue, someone actually has to be there to fix it.

I learned this lesson the hard way.

One of my quirks is to diversify everything I do. I try not to have even two eggs in one basket. If one piece of income gets upset by something, the others are still making . Unfortunately, everything is really expensive and takes years to figure out. I would say that I am halfway there.

As I write, I have anew being set up with a new company. I will still keep my current running, but will move some sites over to the new company. They are well known for their support. If you call at 2AM, someone will be there to answer the phone and fix the problem. I am most likely going to see if this is true, and if it is, it’s well spent.
