I was talking to my favorite brother, Jeff, yesterday. Apparently, Stephanie is having some issues with her car. Jeff is going to help out with parts and all that.
After talking about Stephanie’s issue, we started talking about what kind of car I want to get next. I have a year or two before I have to visit the dealer and trade my car in. I have whittled the choice down to two…The BMW 5 Series or the Toyota Camry Hybrid. I am really having a tough time with it.
I try to think of myself as “Green,” but it’s hard. I know that everything is “right” about the Toyota and everything is “wrong” with the BMW. One of the things I am looking at is the fuel mileage of each car. As we were talking, Jeff sent me a great link on how to find out your car’s gas mileage. I took a look at it and found out a few things. Basically, the BMW’s mileage is about 18/24 and the Toyota’s mileage is about 33/34. One is obviously better than the other’s.
Here is the problem…I know when I walk into the Toyota dealer, I will simply have to choose the color of car I want. I will already have read all I could read about the car. All I will have to do is negotiate on price. I will be sitting in a sea of Camrys. Not too exciting. Then, I will drive away in an even bigger sea of Camrys. When I walk into the BMW dealer, I will leave with a car. I know this, so I am hesitant about going there just to look. That’s the way I am. The Beamers are fast and sexy, and so am I. Yeah, right.
My brother seems to like his BMW and recommends that brand. He has a 328i…a little small for me. I want just a little more room. He likes the speed and handling. I am not a fast driver, but wouldn’t mind something that keeps up with my current Honda Accord V6. My Accord has some pep. The Camry is a four cylinder and I can’t imagine is being very fast.
The real issue is this…the Camry is very safe and kind of middle of the road. It’s quality, but not very exciting. Do I really want to be known as that boring computer dude? Oh, how techy. If I got the BMW, at least people would view me as something that I might not be. I like hiking, working and driving around to find new towns. That’s not too exciting, but at least people might think that I will run them over if they get in my way.
Can you see which direction I am leaning in? I guess we’ll see what my commute time will be in two years. That will be the big factor I look at.

Jeff sent me a few photos of the most recent transition of his 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1. I have been a very bad brother and haven’t posted them. I blame my selfish greed for this. I will try to do better in the future.

Tomorrow, I have an appointment with a local tire service center to replace the tires on my car. When I purchased the car (1998 Honda Accord - V6), I think it had around 76,000 miles on it. The tires weren’t the greatest, so I had them changed. The ones I got were 50,000 mile tires.
Well, as it turns out, I didn’t end up being the greatest tire rotator, so I can feel flat spots in the tires now. The car currently has about 147,000 miles on it, so I don’t feel too bad.
Earlier this week, I pulled into the tire place and a nice guy walked out to me with a clip board. I thought this was kind of nice. He was quite friendy. I told him what I was looking for and he wrote down the tire size, rating and all that stuff. He noticed that the car currently had “H” rated tires, yet the car called for “V” rated tires. That’s the speed rating. We went inside and picked out the new tires that I wanted. They have to order them, so my appointment is Friday.
I was asking the person inside about what the rating meant. She didn’t have the greatest response, so I looked here. This has some helpful information, but I am still looking for more. “Speed Rating” doesn’t help much.
I found an article called,”The Truth About Performance Tires” that helped somewhat. The website says, “This “V” meant the tire had been safely tested in the laboratory to stay together at speeds up to 149 mph. Thus, the modern day high performance tire was introduced in America.” If you read the article, you can get a feel of what the other ratings mean, such as “H,” “S” and “Z” ratings.
The “V” rated tires is equipped to handle speeds up to 149 MPH. I am very happy to hear that because I have always thought something was holding me back in that car.

If I had to guess, which I do, which replacement part of a car is most overlooked, I would say the rear brakes. I say this because I always overlook them. I do this probably because the front brakes do something like 70% of the braking action. I have changed the front brakes on almost all of my cars.
The problem with only replacing the front brake pads and rotors is that you are leaving the rears with compromised braking ability, meaning, the rear brakes aren’t doing their jobs as much as they should be. What does this cause? Well, it causes increased stress on the front brakes resulting in faster wear on the pads and higher heat on the rotors, which equals warping. I guess the moral of this story is to make sure you replace your rear brake pads and rotors from time to time. This will save you money in the long run.
Gee, if I only had followed my own advice, my rear rotors wouldn’t have looked like this…

Yes, that’s mine. I did the back brakes last evening. Look at the small shiny area where the pads were actually touching the rotor.
I will go over this for only one tire, since the other side was identical. First, I pulled off the tire. Then, I had to drill out the two small screws holding on the rotor. Once that was done, I took off the caliper and then the piece that holds the caliper on to the spindle. I had to do this because that piece wrapped around the rotor. I had no choice. Everything was pretty easy to take off, except for those two rotor screws. I had to scrape some gunk off some existing parts to make it easier to put on the new parts, but everything went smoothly. I would say that the whole thing took about an hour.
Believe it or not, my least favorite part about working on my car is carrying the jack from the basement to the driveway.
