There are actually two different bird nests under the back porch. I look at them almost every time I walk by. The parent birds like to whiz by my head to scare the heck out of me. Actually, I am just writing that for entertainment, I really don’t get scared by birds, even if they are whizzing by my head. Now, Crows on the other hand are scary. When there are hundreds of them all screaming at the same time, it’s a little freaky.
I took a nice picture of the birds living under the porch this morning. Tell me if you like it.

That’s an up-close nature shot. I kept thinking the momma bird was going to dive bomb me from behind, but it never happened. I wouldn’t have been scared if it had.
Just a few weeks ago, these little birds were much smaller. I could hardly even see their heads. One time I saw all of the beaks wide open, sticking straight up in the air. I said to them, “No little birdies, I don’t have any worms for you” and I walked away.
That’s a “Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey” line if I ever saw one.

On Thursday night, my brother met Laura and me up in Manchester for dinner. Laura and I left a little early so we could visit Pottery Barn at Evergreen Walk in South Windsor.
I really like Pottery Barn, not for its fame from a certain “Friends” episode, but for its quality furniture. I need some office furniture, so we went to browse. We didn’t buy anything, but checked some stuff out for another day. I would say we need a bunch of things. Besides the office furniture, we need a bedroom set, coffee table and end tables, to say the least. One day it’ll all be complete. For now, we will focus on one item at a time.
After we left Pottery Barn, we had some time to spare. We wandered over to Williams-Sonoma to check out their kitchen stuff. This is another really good store, but expensive. Actually, I’m not sure if it’s expensive when you really compare quality. A few minutes in there and we were ready to go. I would say that the Promenade Shops at Evergreen Walk is a very nice place. It felt like we were down South on a vacation.
A few minutes later, we pulled into the parking lot of Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Manchester. My brother has been raving about this place for a few weeks. He just loves the bread.
We all sat down and ordered. A few minutes later, the waitress brought over the bread, which was very good indeed. After that, we ate and ate and ate (the main courses). It was sinful. When we were almost done, the waitress asked if we needed anything and my brother mentioned that I wanted more bread. I said, “No I don’t” kind of embarassed. She offered to bring me a loaf to bring home and I accepted. Just a bit later, the nice and very kind waitress brought me three loaves of bread to bring home. Wasn’t that nice of her?

Every time we go someplace, I ask Laura to remind me to take a picture of whatever we are doing. Every time, I forget and she never mentions anything. When I sit down to write about it, I end up not having any photos. With that being the case, today’s photo is of the bag we brough the leftovers home in. In this business, you need to be creative.

When we got home this afternoon, we found fat Simon laying out on the stairs, soaking up the sun. The weird thing is that he didn’t move when we tried to get up and down. He only moved when Holly ran by. I think he got a little nervous, because we all know Holly will step on your face if given the chance.
I ran to get my camera, but by the time I got back to Simon, he was already sitting up. Oh well, at least I got this pleasurable pose…

I would say it’s about 75 degrees right now. It’s good if you don’t move. I haven’t sweat yet this season, but then again, I haven’t done anything.
The trees are right on the cusp of exploding. Things are starting to flower and the leaves are all just unwinding from their buds. I would say within a week we will start seeing some real action.
Down in Westchester, everything is out…flowering trees I mean. The Magnolias are out in full force. The Crabapples and the rest are filling the air with fresh pollen…mmmm, you can smell it.

Many bulbs are up and in bloom. What you are seeing here with the Daffodils are just the early risers. The Iris is coming up too, but they bloom later on. Also, just the leaves of the Tulips are showing. It’s pretty fun to watch the whole process. I actually live for it.

I think it’s actually after shave. I don’t shave with a blade, so it doesn’t go on my face. I think cologne and after shave are the same thing anyway. They smell the same.
Well, it’s official. I finished my first bottle of cologne…in my life. I think Laura got this for me a few years ago. I have been working on it every day. Am I the first male on the globe to actually finish a bottle of cologne? I think the tradition is to just keep getting them for birthdays and holidays, but I’m not sure what happens after that.

I fell in love with Aspen a long time ago while in my teenage years. It’s one of those colognes that you can pick up in Rite Aid for a few bucks. It has a nice smell. Now, onto my bottle of Cool Water. Oh, how cool it will be.

How We Tweet: The Definitive List of the Top Twitter Clients
Twitter has one of the fastest growing application ecosystems of any web service outside of Facebook. For this post, we looked at 37,248 tweets and found 142 different ways in which people interact with the Twitter service. Some of the results, which follow below, were rather surprising.
Is Ethanol Production Fueling the Size of the Dead Zone?
Every year a New Jersey-size patch of the Gulf of Mexico where no sea life can be sustained is created by nitrogen-based fertilizer runoff. This runoff comes largely from corn production, which is now tied heavily to the production of ethanol in areas of the Midwest where the runoff comes from. So what can we do about it?

World’s First Commercially Viable Cellulosic Ethanol Plant O
Range Fuels Inc. announced yesterday it has secured over $100 million in Series B funding, an investment that could make it the first company to seriously commercialize cellulosic ethanol. The first phase of construction will produce 20 million gallons of mixed alcohols per year by 2009, and has the potential to expand to up to 120 million gallons.
Diesel Grows On Trees, Seriously
Apparently scientists (and some of our readers, surely) have known that we can grow oil for years, and not in the grow-corn-make-oil kind of way. The Brazilian Copaifera langsdorfii can be tapped for a natural diesel fuel that requires simple filtering before being poured into a truck. Is it viable for world use?

This is just a quick note to all you WordPressers out there letting you know what WordPress 2.5 has been released and is ready for business.
I installed the upgrade this morning. I would say it took about 4 minutes to complete. The WordPress people really have the process down to a few small things. Basically, if you already have a recent version, you just need to upload some new files over the old. I’m sure that each upgrade adds some new ones too.
In WordPress 2.5, the look and functionality of the admin section are quite different from the previous version. It seems more intuitive, but still, it’s going to take some time to get used to. The front-end had no issues.
This is a sample of the new back-end…

I have so say, there are about a ton and a half of new features to play with. Just uploading that last image took some getting used to. There are soooo many things…

I decided that tonight would be a great night to drink my new Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout that Paul gave me. I know I said that I was going to drink it the other night, but I forgot. By the time I looked at it sitting on my desk, it was too late and I would’ve gone to bed drunk. Then I would’ve been kicked out and headed for the couch. Well, that probably wouldn’t have happened…Laura would’ve laughed at me and punched me or something.
Anyway, the beer is great. Thank you again. It has a lighter pour than my previous beer reviews, but the flavor is good and the color is a nice dark brown. I also decided that I should become a beer photographer. Take a look at my latest…

Pretty cool, huh? And to think, that was my second shot.
I have also decided that maybe I should get a beer making kit. I always wanted one of these, but now that my brother-in-law just got one, maybe we can trade recipes. It’s always good to get into something with someone else. If anyone knows of any good kits out there, please let me know. I have some good beers in mind.

Hi there,
If you have ever linked to me at http://www.gaulard.com/blog/, please be ever so kind as to update your link to http://www.jaygaulard.com/blog/. It would be greatly appreciated.
It is getting a little depressing logging into the admin portion of this blog to see there are no links to it.
Thank you,
Jay G.

Ever want to know a little more about your town? Hmmm…do your neighbors have any money or are they broke? Are you broke? Maybe, maybe not.
Check this out. My mother emailed this link to me this afternoon. You can get the skinny on your zip code. Check out the average educational achievement of your area, marital staus, household income and even various occupations.
I am not sure I like this. I guess I do, since I put a few zip codes in. I am mainly interested in finding out about towns I am considering moving to. I wouldn’t mind a nice high educational achievement level as well a high household income. I could care less if you were married or not. I think I would care a little about what you did for a living. I would like to be around white collared folk. They have fewer tractor trailer trucks parked in their yards.
This website reminds me a lot of epodunk.com. They kind of do the same thing, except they don’t compare to surrounding areas.
Hmmm…I wonder what I will find.
