Alarm System Install

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

I wasn’t going to even bother with this post, but I think I have to now. We have the home alarm people come and install an in the house this morning. It was pretty uneventful, up until this point.

We have been getting one ring phone calls all day. I thought it was something weird with the setup. Just about 5 minutes ago, the phone rang once again. Then, my rang and my old left me a message. He said that he just tried to call the house phone and it sounded like a . I tried the call from my and sure enough, it sounded like a .

I called the alarm people and they will have someone come out to the house on Tuesday. It’s the first appointment available because of the holiday.

What’s the moral of the story? If you need to call me, call my .

Power Surge Blocks Access To Server?

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Last night around 8PM, I heard the /battery that we have for the beep. It’s the first time I heard that since we have been here. I am pretty used to it because they are rather sensitive. Any causes them to beep. It is comforting.

I didn’t think anything of it. Then, a little while later, I tried to access some that I have on one of my . I couldn’t get on. I tried again a little while later and still couldn’t get on. I asked Laura if she was able to get to the sites and she said no. She told me that she was working on one of them when she couldn’t get to it anymore. I figured the ’s monitoring “red light” would’ve gone off by now and the would be brought back on line by them. Nothing. I decided to submit a .

The responded to the informing me that they could access the and all the sites just fine. I then called my sister down in Chapel Hill, NC to see if she could log on to the sites. She could access them just fine too. The strange thing is that I was able to see all the on my other like nothing was wrong.

I responded to the ticket and let them know that I could not access the from only my location, but it seems like the rest of the world was looking at the sites without issue. I felt so left out. They asked me for my so they could check the . That was fine. Then, they asked me to do a to the . I did that and the connection timed out at the . Then, they did a from the back to me, and the connection was timing out at my location.

This was all getting kind of odd. They asked that I cycle the . I did and the problem was solved. I was able to access the again.

What I find puzzling is that I was only blocked from one in the world…mine. How did this happen. After thinking for a while, I remember right at the moment of the hiccup, the issue began. Could being on a at the time of a surge (or failure) make your block you from the () you were looking at?

Transplanting Shrubs

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Today’s job was to start transplanting some of the from the front of the to the back. I am trying to take all the good (did I just say ?) from the front hillside to transplant in the back, near the driveway. I already showed you the area I am working on in a previous post.

The reason I am taking these away from the front, is because I think more height is needed up there. I am planning on planting a good variety of Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, Canadian Hemlock and Cleveland Pear along the whole hillside. With all the new stuff, the old, low will just be swallowed up. I mean, I am not going to go crazy with trees, just enough to add a nice green look up front. I think a variety of looks really good.

So, back to the back. Here is a picture of what the area looked like without the . Basically, the only stuff in there is the I planted the other day, along with that plant no one can identify. I am going in rows, front to back.

These are the I planted today…

I like the variety of color. Also, back here, it’s going to be much easier for me to maintain each . What I really like is that everything is here already…all I have to do is move stuff around the way I like it.

There is some more stuff in the front that I want to get. I am planning on doing that in the next few days, so I’ll have more photos then.

Visiting the University of Connecticut - Storrs, CT

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Yesterday, while out and about, Laura and I decided to do a drive-by at the University of , or better know as in Storrs, CT. I took a gander at this area on Google a few times and we actually wanted to visit for some time, but never got around to it. Now that we’re about 20 minutes from the town, it’s much easier to get it done.

Now, if you aren’t familiar with , it’s basically the whole town of Storrs. I am not sure if the residents would agree with me, but that’s the way it seemed. I think it’s kind of like State , PA and . Either way, it was pretty cool and much larger than I imagined. It was actually the biggest I have ever visted.

Too bad it was raining and so gloomy out. I took the above photos while we were driving. We did a little zoom zoom through part of the campus.

When I was going to , I had a roommate who just came from . He said it took a half-hour to get anywhere on campus. That’s what it seemed like here.

Taking Down the Basketball Hoop

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Ok, before anyone freaks out and asks why the heck I am taking down a nice , let’s just talk about this.

There are a few good reasons. The first is that I don’t see myself outside all too much. I don’t even own a basketball. That’s not to say I’m not in peak physical condition, just not for basketball. The second (and last) good reason is that my would like the whole set up for his two young boys to play with. They will get much better use out of it that I will. They will enjoy it and know that Uncle Jay treats them right. is going to come get it in June and bring it down to to plant near his driveway. We will handle the hoop with loving care.

I was wondering how easy, or difficult this was going to be. I knew the pole was stuck in some , but I had no idea how much. I began picking at it a few days ago with my pick-ax. I had a little luck, but nothing compared to today.

This afternoon, I went after the ball in earnest. It took about a half-hour, but I got it loose and down on its side. One thing I did notice while taking it down was a bird that flew out of the top of the pipe.

After the whole thing was down on its side and the ball out of the hole, I began taking the net and backboard off. About half way through this, another bird flew out of the top of the pipe, which was now really low to the ground. Again, I didn’t think too much of this. A few minutes later, a little fell out of the pipe. My heart sank. What have I done? The baby was about the size of a baby hampster. I got a flashlight and looked down the pipe and saw about four more baby .

I thought about it for a little while and came up with a solution. I finished taking the backboard and net off and then stood the pole up again, similar to what it was like before.

I was pretty much done bringing my tools back in the garage when I looked back at the pipe. I noticed a bird (that had been on a branch right above me the whole time), fly into the pipe. Then, another one did. They were obviously the parents going back to see how their kids were doing. I felt very good about that. I think we’re back in business.

is coming down in June to grab the setup. This gives the about a month to grow up and fly away. I am hoping they can do it by then. If not, will have to wait a few more days.

Coopers Irish Stout Is In the House

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

A few days ago, I took at look through and MakeBeer.net to see if the Irish I have been waiting for was back in stock. It has been unavailable since before St. Patrick’s Day. I guess all the Irish scooped it up.

Guess what? I was in luck. A new shipment of ingredients had arrived from . I quickly ordered the Irish kit and it arrived today. This is just in the nick of time, because I am running really low on my existing batch of regular .

I am pretty excited about this upcoming batch. The ingredients include some extra for some reason. It says that it gives the a better and something else…I forget. Whatever…if it makes the better, I’m on board.

I mixed everything togther tonight and placed the jug downstairs near the . It’s a warmer, constant down there. The has to stay between 70 and 80 degrees.

Here, I took some pics…

It’s pretty hard to take pictures in the dark. I had to turn on the flash, which I hate to do.

This was going to be my favorite shot, but it came out a little blurry. I tried to clean it up in .

Here is that familiar jug we have all gotten used to by this point.

I really hope this batch comes out good because I have been waiting for it for a long time.

Yard Work - Raking the Leaves is Done

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

I finally finished raking the . There were a lot of them. I can’t say I liked doing this particular job for many reasons. One reason I didn’t care for this activity would be that it wasn’t much fun, with the presence of coming in at a strong second. Apparently, live in old . When you them, instinct tells them to swarm around the closest face they can find. That would be mine. They flew in my eyes, in my ears and one even made it into my mouth. I hope the didn’t see me staggering across the gagging while trying to force the artifact from the back of my throat. Laugh…go ahead.

This is a section of the that is right up against the . It has a cute little area you can sit and read, “Gone With the Wind” (Joe, that’s for you).

This is just a random shot looking up the side yard. I guess I wanted to show that the actually is getting green. I go out and talk to it every day.

Joe, here’s that little area again. Don’t worry, I am going to put nice in there for you.

Now, this is a small area that is right next to the driveway. I am guessing it may have been a vegetable in the past. I decided to replant the from way up on the hill in the front, split them and put them along the driveway. I think they will multiply and fill in nicely. I also am transplanting some other (that I can’t quite identify) as a second row. Then, I am going to get some as a third row and make it reaaal nice.

This is looking up towards the road, from the house. Yes, I raked all that out. I plan on getting some more and scattering them around in this area, to fill it in.

Yes, we have the first bloomed . Isn’t she pretty? I really like because they are so easy to take care of.

A quick shot of a Rhododendron in partial .

Just a shot looking down at the house.

Ahh, the mailbox again. I know you can’t get enough of this. These are the I was talking about above. I have no idea what they are, but I took them from the hillside and placed some of them around the mailbox. If you know what they are, please let me know. Thank you.

It’s like we are having a mini “.” Check this one out showing its colors. Man, I sure hope this is an Azalea.

And finally, this is the front . I even raked out behind the in the front.

I don’t think I am going to have to endure this much raking again. I plan on getting a back-pack blower to keep things in check. It should be easier next time.

I’m outty.

Food Shopping at Shaw’s in East Hampton, CT

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

In an effort to learn more about the area we now sleep in, I have been suggesting that we visit different grocery stores for our food . So far, we have been to in (very nice, but expensive), our local (pretty ok), Super in Colchester (big and very well priced, but nothing wowed me) and today, Shaw’s in East Hampton.

We have been seeing quite a few Shaw’s grocery stores around in various towns. I haven’t really wanted to go in any of them because I prefer those jumbo super-stores. I like a wide variety. Well, today was different. Laura needed to deposit a check and her bank is in East Hampton, so Shaw’s was the store of choice.

We parked in the parking lot and began walking into the store. I turned to Laura an told her I really liked what I saw. Everyone seemed to be in a good mood and the store looked great. We shopped around for a little while, when I turned to say something to Laura. She kind of had a weird look on her face and hadn’t been putting any groceries in the cart for some time. I asked her what was wrong and she told me that the place had crazy high prices. I started to look around and I quickly agreed. Things were way out of whack. I understand that food prices are going up, but this was a little up, up and away. We did what we had to do and left.

After leaving the store, I stopped on the side of the road to grab some photos of in East Hampton. It looks like a really cool lake and it might be good for the canoe I want to get.

Pretty cool, huh?

After mentioning the canoe idea, I have been informed that this wouldn’t be the best place to go. Apparently the River offers some sort of a canoe rental. I will let you know what we find.
