I just wanted to share with you the creatures who are really enjoying the new porch more than anyone else, especially since it is getting a little chilly in the morning. Please allow me to introduce to you, Simon (the orange cat), Michael (the black and white tuxedo cat) and Flipperhumanbodyman (the all black cat).

Now, here is Simon the fat cat enjoying partial sunlight.

Lastly, this is the tent that Rob gave me for my thirtieth birthday. Luckily, Laura got Flipperhumanbodyman laying down right in the middle of the shot. Picture hog.

By the way, Laura is to be credited with these beautiful shots. It comes naturally for her.
Mad peace.

I look at my website performance pretty closely. I think last count (which was this weekend) was 34 websites that I own and operate. I used to say that I was diversifying my portfolio. Now, I don’t know what to call it. I still have a few ideas on the back burner, but I would need more people committed totally to those websites. I suppose this is what happens when someone starts using dedicated servers.
Back to the performance. I notice any little blip that might occur in my website traffic as a whole. Some days (and you might notice this acutely if you manage websites) my traffic drops and some days it even impresses me. I am not sure why it goes up and down like this, but I do take notice.
This weekend was tough. I knew that the holiday weekend was going to keep people pretty much off line, but I am always hopeful that there are people out there who enjoy being connected more than they enjoy going to a BBQ. Friday, Saturday and Sunday were pretty low. Today is picking up nicely to traditional levels. This whole thing got me thinking…again. It’s not like I haven’t thought of this all already. Even Paul and I have had conversations in his office about this very topic, while I lean against the door. Does internet traffic fluctuate as a whole?
The answer is yes…and I would say about as much as your own website stats do. I did a Google search and found an article called, “UM Backbone Overall Internet Traffic Statistics.” This page had some very interesting data on it. I think the main thing it showed me was that I shouldn’t sweat while looking at my website performance. The internet as a whole has its days. I also found another page called, “Internet Usage Statistics - The Big Picture.” This page showed me some different, but not any less interesting, things…the first and foremost being that I should start buying some “.cn” domain names. Hmmmm.
I would say that overall, the internet has cycles just like anything else. I think I have a handle on how to get around the seasonal ups and downs, but I haven’t quite figured out how to get people out of the pool and back on the computer.

I haven’t paid nearly as much attention to my website template website as I should have. Shame on me.
Anyway, this has got to be just the coolest thing about today’s internet. Everyone wants a website, but so many designers charge way too much. Also, there really isn’t much use trying your hand at making your own website look good when there are thousands of talented and experienced template designers out there.
Here, let me show you. Check out some website templates here. You have to admit that they are probably better looking than any designer you know can do. I know I can’t make something so nice. Now, at around $50, you’de have to be crazy to do anything else.
Also, if you ever get itchy to make some money, you can join the website template affiliate program here. They practically sell themselves, so it’s hard to lose.

Back when Laura and I lived in Naples, NY, I was just getting into setting up and using the database aspect of web design. Before that, I just created static pages for the viewing public. I guess that was “Web 1.0.”
Well, during that time, I had a lot to learn. I think one of the first database driven applications was a little web poll for someone’s site. It wasn’t very complex, but I did have a few questions. The developer had a pretty good forum going on, so I went on in to ask a few questions (believe it or not, I still use the web poll for a few radio station sites I manage today).
I wrote my question in the forum and waited for a response. A little while later, someone politely answered. His name was Will Spence. I thought it was pretty cool, because I never really used this type of thing for communication…forums that is. Will was a good guy and he helped me with a few things. I later spoke with him about some other stuff and became friends with him. Over the years, he has dropped me a few emails, but we really haven’t kept in touch.
Well, just the other day, I recieved an email from Will letting me know that he has a great new project going on to serve the Stem Cell community. I gotta tell ya, Will is always out there trying to make a difference. I told him a long time ago that if I was ever out in his area, I would visit him.
Ok, so here is the pitch - stop by his new website called “Polistem” and, if you think you can help out and make a difference, join in and let your voice be heard. I know for a fact that Will just LOVES it when people get excited about his projects, so…let’s do it.

I was doing a little research this morning on search engine ranking factors and came across a great web page.
The page is pretty good. I read it almost to the bottom (it’s kind of long). If you are into SEO, this should do you some good. Here, check out the first line…
This document represents the collective wisdom of 37 leaders in the world of organic search engine optimization.
Now, that is something that might help your website.
Here is my favorite line. Paul should get a kick out of this. It pertains to HTML validation…
Validation? Please, oh please, make it go away. Validation zealots just plain freak me out. Walking under ladders, breaking mirrors and stepping on cracks probably has more influence on your SERPs than validation.
I like that one.
