Plugged In, Not Charging - Windows Vista + Laptop

June 30, 2007 – 3:47 pm | by gaulardcom

I noticed a while ago that whenever I turn on my BRAND NEW HP laptop, the battery indicator say something like, 83%. I say to myself, “What the heck is that about? This laptop is brand new and the battery was charged to 100% when I used it last.”

Today, when I turned the laptop on, it said, “Plugged in, not charging” and the power read 8%. I thought that was odd, because it was around 80% when I turned it off. Is there something draining the battery when I am not using it? That’s really not cool. I mean, I haven’t turned the laptop on for a few weeks, but that’s no excuse to drain the battery.

Today, I looked up the “Plugged in, not charging” phrase in Google and a few good results showed up. Apparently, there are quite a few people that are having similar issues with their laptops when Windows Vista is installed.

When the laptop was on, I noticed the little lightening bolt was blinking. I read that if you unplug and then re-plug in the power cord, the battery will start charging again. Well, I had to turn the computer off first, before I unplugged the power cord, because if I just unplugged it, the computer would go dead.

What is going on? Is this a Windows Vista power management bug? Does it have anything to do with power management at all or just that the people at Microsoft who created Vista don’t work on laptops?

my dv6000t sometimes does that too (plugged in, not charging), when battery rate is about 12% below and tries to charge it, it says “plugged in, not charging” but resumes charging after a couple of minutes. Is yours same?

  5. By gaulardcom on Jul 7, 2007 | Reply

In my case, the battery said “Plugged in, not charging” and read 8%. I couldn’t unplug it like I read somewhere, because the laptop would shut off immediately.

I got it to charge again by shutting the computer down and unplugging the charger. Then, I plugged the charger in again and started up the laptop. It worked that time and I let it charge to 100%.

    ya, same situation here
    Plugged in, not charging
If you are using a laptop, don’t worry
usually this thing only appear when your battery was under 12%
The system need time to balance the battery
so you might shut down your computer for like 5 mins with your AC plugged
then turn it on again, everything will be fine @@

I’ve got the same problem too, the battery doesn’t charge, we’ve already tried changing everything, power supply etc, including the laptop itself, switching the harddrive over. Still not working. We’ve checked all the power settings inside the laptop too, and they’re how they should be. Running out of ideas

Ok, obviously this is a big problem. I wrote this post not too long ago and received a bunch of comments. I think it may be a Windows Vista bug. Does everyone here have Windows Vista?

    Any word on a patch?

In my case, the battery didn’t drain. The laptop was just pulling power from the AC cord.

tried installing windows xp, ive crossed the same problem, my lappy doesn’t charge for a couple of minutes but resumes afterwards. HP battery check even tells me my battery should be replaced (AC plugged, not charging) then tells me that is good when it starts charging. now, what is this all about HP?

I had the exact same problem with my new hp dv6000, i contacted hp help support and they told me to install and updated bios (didn’t fix it), and to callibrate the battery (didn’t work either). so far i haven’t found a fix either, i’m looking at just taking my computer back and getting a different brand. obtw, i too have vista home premium. i checked vista support on microsoft.com and they have no fixes.

It’s not just an HP thing. I just noticed today that my brand new Lenovo N200 laptop is doing the same thing. It’s stuck at 95% right now, I haven’t drained it yet to see if that changes. Unplug/replug and restart did not fix it. I’m using Vista Home Premium.

  21. By Anthony on Jul 26, 2007 | Reply

OK, just stumbled across this online.

Seems some people think it is a feature to prevent overcharging. This makes sense if it doesn’t charge when the battery is already in the 90% range (as mine is), but I have no idea why it would refuse to charge a battery in the 15% range as mentioned above. Maybe that “balancing” issue?

Check the battery meter help in vista. Search for the page titled “Battery meter: frequently asked questions”. Look for the answer to the question “Why does the battery icon keep changing?”. The explanation given for the battery state “plugged in, not charging” state is given thus:

While the battery is charging, the battery icon fills at 10 percent increments. If the battery icon is not filling, the battery may not be reporting a charging state. If your mobile PC is plugged in for a long time and the battery level remains low, there may be a problem with your computer hardware. If you have an older battery, it may be fully charged, but the full charge doesn’t appear as 100 percent.

Seems like some issue in the interface between battery and bios to me.

ok im not sure what i did exactly but im now it is charging and acting normal,.. this is what i did.> i did a series of taking the battery out and plugging/unplugging the powercord… while the battery was out and cord was unplugged i did a “powerdrain” which is done by holding the power button for about a minute. after that i put the battery back in and plugged cord back in and waited for about 5-10 minutes. the charge light is now staying on instead of blinking :D!! so now i boot up and its acting normal again.. only took me about a week anda half to figure it out but now it works, not exactly what made it start working again.. but it is. Funny thing is, i would do a hp battery health check and when it was doing the not charging thing,.. it would say it needed to be replaced. But now it says the battery is fine … strange,. STILL no confirmation on whats causing this problem tho.

I am having the same problem with a brand new HP TX1220us tablet/notebook. The power supply does not provide any power at all to the laptop. It does, however, supply power to my xb3000 base station (saving my life right now). I even have another poer supply but I suspect that it is also defective - so much for QC.

Read the forum, and upgraded the BIOS to F.14, didn’t work…

Tried unplugging and waiting like another posted suggested, didn’t work…

Tried the power reset (holding power button in on position, didn’t work…

Called HP and spoke a a pleanant Indian fellow and we did all the same tests. Along with the battery test which fdailed because I couldn’t get the AC adpater to power the laptop.

They conclude that it is a faulty AC adapter. I am not so sure, they are sending a new one and I will let you all know how it goes.

If anyone else figures out what is really the problem please post.

I’ve been searching the wbe and found some posts on similar issues related to the “Microsoft AC Adapter” hardware driver.

I have tried to disable the driver and that just makes the system think it is running on battery withour and power connection. I am hesitant to uninstall the driver as I don’t have that much battery power left to reinstall if I need to.

Anyone try this course of action?

I was glad to see that this is an issue for others. I have a new Acer and am experiencing the same “plugged in and not charging” message. I have tried the various remedies listed above, to no avail.

Acer is sending a new battery, as they state they haven’t heard of battery problems with Vista. (Hmmm) So, hopefully, it is a bad battery but from the list it seems that it is Vista. I amhoping for the battery just to start working again, as others have.

  42. By Brandon S on Aug 8, 2007 | Reply

Yesterday while doing all the testing, we ran a ‘Battery Health Check’ while plugged into the base station (this is not ideal since the test requires that it be attached to the AC adpater, which wasn’t being recongized. The test indicated that my battery needed replacing - not lkely since it is brand new.

This morning, after leaving the laptop plugged in on the base station (via expansion port), the battery seems to have fully charged.

I reran the battery health test and now it says that the battery is ‘healthy’.

Seems to me that there is something doing with the Microsoft AC adapter driver or along those lines.

I have the same problem with my HP Pavillion dv6000. It is stuck at 0% and says plugged in, not charging. I contacted HP Support live chat and they told me to update BIOS, reinstall power mangement, and to try draining my battery. Nothing worked and they say they are going to ship me a new one free of charge.

    Update:

It seems that the battery now will fully charge when attached to the base station. The ‘lightning bolt’ stays lit until its charged. But still no love from the AC adapter.

I spent some time with HP support and still no real resolution to the problem. This time we re-ran the ‘Pweer Drain” fix - this did nothing.

Next, we ‘uninstalled’ the MIcrosoft AC Adapter driver. The driver automatically reinstalls itself on the next restart.

Still same problem - no power from AC adapter when plugged into the socket. It will power and charge from the base station though.

    Still frustrated….

I just wonder how often I will have to do this.

I removed the battery on my DV9000. (see end)
    then it said unknown source.
i put it back in and it said plugged in,charging! and it was!

    How to remove a battery.
im not sure this is how you do with all HP’s but on the bottom, there should be a little switch. you move it over and push it in. TADA ITS OUT.

Wish it was a simple as taking out the battery - tried that and every combination of that with power on and off, plugged in and out, etc.

I just got a replacement laptop and so far (fingers crossed) the system is stable and charging. Thanks to CompUSA. Replaced the laptop with very little hassle. HP and/or Microsoft on the other hand needs to learn how to stand behind thier products.

I have a HP nc6400 (3 weeks old), and I was experiencing this as well. Battery was at 2% remaining, plugged in, not charging. I also noticed that the charge light was not coming on, even when the computer was off.

I tried everything mentioned so far. I ended up doing a system restore all the way back to before I had any windows updates installed. Rebooted, waited about 2 minutes and boom, it started charging again. Now its behaving as it should: charging both when the computer is on and off - all the way to 100%.

I’m not sure why this worked, but perhaps one of the windows updates screwed with some setting somewhere which caused this. –just a quick poll, how many of you with this problem are running the intel pro/wireless 3945ABG wireless adaptor, or have computers running the intel 945GM chipset. — these are two items that Vista has updated drivers for. Maybe there is a connection. (I decided ths time not to install these updates, and so far so good)

A similar approach here. I bought an HP dv6406nr at Best Buy and 3 weeks into it started having this same issue after I let the battery drain once. After multiple tries of the various suggestions, here’s what worked for me:

    (1) Turn on computer w/ AC plugged in like always.
    (2) Remove battery (keeping AC adapter plugged in).
    (3) Shutdown computer.
    (4) Replace battery.
    (5) Wait a few minutes, and the lightning bolt icon which has usually been only flashing is now a steady blue while it charges the laptop, then turns off when the battery’s at 100%

What the heck is going on with all this?!? AC adapter? Battery? I don’t know, but I can tell you that a few days ago I called HP for a new battery, they said they’d get one out to me, then I got a call today saying it was going to take a week or so since they’re having a lot of requests similar to mine. Not cool.

Well, I typed “computer plugged in but not charging” into google and look what came up?

I have the exact same issue, exact same computer (dv6000), and Vista. This computer is about five months old. I’ve been removing the battery and rebooting like crazy. No improvement. My battery is stuck at 50%.

This is making me very unhappy; I move this thing around a lot (hence why I have a laptop…) and it will be close to unusable without a battery. Sigh.

This isn’t the only problem I have. I also get blue screen errors very often. So far, I’m not exactly impressed with Vista.

This very computer was sent as a replacement, so I don’t have high hopes that they’ll be willing to send me another one. Great.

Hey everyone, I started having the same problem as everyone here since about 2 days ago I think x_x for example, when I notice that my battery is low (below 15% life left) I proceed to plug it in to charge, however when I do so the little battery icon says, of course, “plugged in, not charging” but after waiting about 10 min. it will beging charging, so I dont know exactly what to say. anyway, from what ive read online there are indeed many other topics and discussions about this, and I beleive all of these (or at least most) people were Vista users. so…I think, based on what ive seen, that this problem is some sort of Vista problem/bug, I dunno for sure though. if anyone has any ideas or info on a fix for this, it would be greatly appriceated. Thanks.

I have the same problem with my HP dv6000 series laptop. I bought this 2 months ago and a few days ago, it also tells me “plugged in battery not charging” I tried everything and even waiting does not work. I even called HP Support and they told me to unplugit, remove the battery, reset by holding the power on button down for 30 seconds and nothing has worked. THey also checked the battery which initially said it was bad but after holding down the power on buttone for 30 seconds, it fixed that and said the battery was good. THey are now sending me a new battery which I imagine won’t work either. How come HP and Microsoft haven’t figured this out yet????? My laptop is totally useless without plugging it in.

I have the same problem on my new hp dv6000 series running Vista Home Premium, but have not let power run down enough to experience a failure, but have noticed that power drains very quickly (under an hour). Has anyone sent this complaint to a magazinelike PC Magazine or PC World. Maybe they can apply pressure that we can’t.

We just got this problem about 10 minutes ago on the Pavilion dv6000 running Vista Home Premium. My brother was using it and he didn’t plug it in correctly and it ran to 0%.

We tried turning it off and on but it didn’t work. I followed gaulardcoms advice (July 7th, 4 posts from top) and unplugged it and plugged it into a different mains, left it off for 5 minutes and turned it on and it was fixed. Now leaving it to charge to 100%.

Nothing of the above worked for me on my brand new Sony Vaio VGN-CR120 EL. Battery got stuck on 51% (Plugged In, Not Charging)after i updated Vista Home Premium. Then I tried the following:

1 Shut the laptop down completely.
2 Removed the battery and the A/C cord.
    3 Pushed the Power button
4 Mounted the battery and the A/C cord.
5 The battery indicator showed charging light.
6 Waited 5 minutes and then switched the laptop on. As soon as I was logged in the charging light stopped blinking. The battery had gained a few % power.

Repeated point 1-5 and waited till the indicator stopped blinking. In Vista it now showes 87% and that’s all I can get.

  88. By Lill on Sep 2, 2007 | Reply

This clearly shows that Vista is the factor that makes the battery charging fail. My computer, just a few hours used, showed 100%
    battery until I updated Vista.

I’ll buy another harddrive as soon as possible and install windows XP. Hopefully the battery then will charge 100%. I’ll be very disappointed if Vista damaged my battery so that it just ccarges up to 88%.

I think it’s a problem that Microsoft makes it so very hard to see what the updates changes. Futhermore it’s a problem that Microsoft blames the hardware and nothing else.

I have a 4 month old HP DV6000 laptop, Vista, and the 0% battery problem. Vista shows “Plugged in, not charging”. The solution I use is similar to what has already been mentioned:

    1. Turn off the laptop
    2. Remove the battery and AC connection.
    3. Hold the power button for 1 minute to drain any remaining charges on the circuit board.
    4. Install the battery
    5. Plug in to AC power. Do not power up the laptop! The charge light should now be solid, not flashing.
    6. Allow the laptop to charge for a couple of hours.

My theory is that Vista will not allow recharge on a dead battery. However, doing via hardware, as described above seems to solve the problem. It would probably be best not to completely discharge the battery before recharging again.

  92. By lal2018 on Sep 4, 2007 | Reply

Roger, I have the smae laptop: HP Pavillion dv6258se with the battery drained, 0% would not charge and only works off AC. Infuriating for a new laptop! I am running XP & Linux Ubuntu. I ditched Vista! Will be moving fully to Linux as I learn more about it. I followed Adam’s post on Jul 30, 2007 to the letter and so far the lightening-bolt light has remained on blue…meaning it’s charging. Make sure you switch off the laptop, take out the battery, disconnect the power cable and leave it for 5 mins. Do the “powerdrain” by pressing the power button down for a good minute or more, then reconnect the battery, (run the powerdrain again for good measure, then reconnect the power cable. Seems to have done the trick…for now. Shame on HP. In the future I am going back to IBM for my hardware and moving to Linux Ubuntu for my desktop. Vista is too instrusive, a security nightmere and just doesn’t work.

hey guys i have been having the same problem as everyone else with my brand new hp pavillion laptop for about 2 weeks.(plugged in not charging) I think i have fixed mine. Heres what i did.

    1. I shutdown and then i left the ac plugged in and took out the battery and put it back in.
    2. then I let it charge until the charge light turned off.
    3. I then started it up in safe mode.
    4. Once it booted up i reseated the battery once again with the ac in.
    5. I then restarted it in regular mode and now everything seems to be working.

The problem with vista isn’t the ability to charge the battery, its the indicator light. Whenever its plugged in, it DOES charge, however the indicator displays that it is “plugged in, not charging” at whatever percent it has drained to at it’s lowest point. Your laptop will work correctly. You simply cannot rely on the indicator to display the correct state of the battery.

None of the above solutions on the HP DV6000 series worked. I tried something that worked, so it is another possibility for you to try, if you have the 6000 series. With Windows booted up and the laptop plugged into the wall, the battery light was blinking, but not charging. The taskbar icon still said plugged in but not charging, 0%.

I cycled through the 3 power profiles many times for about 30 seconds. Then I flipped the laptop over and slid the slider bar over on the battery to release it. I then took it in and out of the socket as fast as i could (not terribly vigerously or forcibly) for about ten seconds.

I flipped the computer back over and the charge light was a steady glow, and it was charging.

Please post back if this works for you. Keep cycling through power options, and then flipping it over and smacking the battery power contacts off the motherboard as fast as you can (not smacking, but without taking the whole battery out, just lifting the one end with copper contacts up and down).

Good luck guys. And thanks for the other tips that seemed to contribute (the power profile cycling)

Everyone who will post a comment in future could you please specify your problem:
    1) Laptop not charging when windows running
    2) Laptop not charging AT ALL. even when it turned off and AC plugged in.

Cause it seems to me there are two problems about charging a battery. One is a Vista problem, another - undefined(when it doesn’t charge at all).
    I have A problem №2 and I still didn’t solve it.
Please anyone who know how to do it ….. help me please!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine is different, this is what i’m experiencing:

When laptop charge is below 20%, after i’ve plugged the AC, i have to wait for like 2-5 minutes (is this normal?) before it actually charges the laptop (plugged in, charging) it’s always like that but i’m still glad it only have delays and not charging at all.

    So there would be three:
    1) Laptop not charging when windows running
    2) Laptop not charging AT ALL. even when it turned off and AC plugged in.
    3) Laptop will charge but has delays after plugging the AC adaptor. (Vista, below 20%)

Well, I just spent a few minutes and read just about every entry here and yes, the dv6000 I purchased has similar problems. Interesting though HP immediately wanted to replace my battery based on the HP total care battery test >> It basically said dude.. your battery is toast. I fought with HP service (before reading this post) in earnest asking for another solution and I offered to pay more to get a battery that supposedly would work better, and they bascially said screw you dumb @22 take this used battery, while we hold credit card hostage, that someone else already sent back to us… then.. hold your tongue, dance around the computer have a shot tequila and go to sleep and maybe, this time, your battery charger will magically start working again. Well the last part is a stretch but HPs silent response on this serious issue is actually well calculated and in my opinion, legally motivated to wait until consumers push the legal aspect of HPs oversight and ignorant product testing during development stage. Shame on you HP, a standout in American engineering and technology accepting mediocracy and turning a blind eye and cold shoulder to the consuming pubic while taking the money and running… booo.. I won’t ever buy your product again. You guys (HP) are no better then the internet predators asking you to deposit their money in your bank account after, of course, you pay them $10,000.00 for the deposit instructions. Unbelievable.
Just for the record.. my work issued IBM laptop battery and charger work flawlessly.

    Class action is the answer.

I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 - had the same problem here, which started after a Vista Update. Here is what I did.
1- Used system restore and restored Vista to before the updates.
2- After the computer booted up, battery still showing as not charging.
3- Without turning notebook off, removed the battery and inserted it back. Did not work.
4- Removed battery once more and inserted it again. Battery started showing as charging.

I will later investigate if this started only after the Vista update, or if it was a coincidence.

    Understanding battery charging issues
If the notebook battery is not charging or the notebook does not indicate that the battery is charging, the most likely scenario is that the battery itself is operating correctly, but its power management software may have become corrupt. In order to correct the problem, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the power management software by using the Device Manager. This document will explain how to uninstall and reinstall the ACPI Battery listings in Windows Vista, as well as how to obtain and install updated BIOS files, if needed to correct other battery issues.

presario f500 - I had the 0% plugged in, not charging problem. I changed my power plan, removed and put back the batt, etc. and nothing. Finally, I shut down and unplugged/plugged in the power at the laptop insert. I noticed the ring light took a couple secs to come on and that the power light on the front was blinking.
I gave it about half an hour and then un/replugged the power and then the ring came back on instantly, but the front blue power light didn’t. I took out and put back the back - same. I powered up and now it’s charging.
Go figure. I’m not sure which change(s) did it???
I’m at 12% now and charging. I’ll have to keep an eye on it, but I don’t like it.
I’ll probably try the drive reinstall from the link above next, but wanted to document my experience.

    “plugged in, not charging”
    New HP Pavillion
    Windows Vista Ultimate
Battery at 0% and wasn’t charging, nice portable machine.
    Many thanks to previous posters.
    This worked for me…
With AC connected and computer on, removed battery and reinserted. Started charging.

This was first time with this issue, not confident that it will work again if the symptom recurs.

The common component on this thread (and others too) seems to be Vista. I mean this is a brand new machine, it isn’t the battery or the contacts, and others have different machines etc. Suspect some “clever” power management code that essentially gets into deadlock by asking the battery what it can do but the battery is dead and doesn’t respond, and Vista misinterprets that as “do nothing” -> then removing and reinserting wakes it up to say ‘oh here is a dead battery charge it”. (some have had other lucky ways of waking it up with changing the power mgmt, etc).
Someone besides us should be losing sleep over this.

Have a 3 month old HP dv9500. “Plugged in not charging” started occurring about 1 month ago. Only thing that resolves is taking battery out and putting it back in. It fully charges, keeps the charge for a day or 2, and then slowly drains “plugged in not charging”. Have gone through all troubleshooting steps mentioned. Geniuses at HP live support said it was a problem with the battery, which of course it wasn’t. They insisted it was, so I let them send me a new battery after confirming it would be the extended battery that I originally purchased. Confirmed this 2 times via live support and gave them a date/time to call me to take my cc info. Of course they contact me at 7:30AM, not on the day requested. I confirm multiple times to the non-English speaking gentlewoman that they will be sending the extended battery. Receive the confirmation email a few hours later and of course the standard battery is listed. Called them via phone support and requested the correct battery be sent again. The non-English speaking gentleman confirmed he corrected the order and they would be sending the extended battery and not the standard. 3 days later I receive the standard battery. Power down PC, unplug power cord, insert incorrect battery replacement, reconnect power cord; within 5 minutes “plugged in not charging”. Seems to be fairly typical. If I power down the PC and let the battery charge, it will do so properly to 100% and the LED battery indicator goes off completely as it should. If the PC is on, once the battery is fully charged, the battery LED blinks continuously and “plugged in not charging” until I reinsert battery and restart the process. Seems to be a problem with Vista since the issue only occurs when the PC is on, and battery charges normally when it is off. Who knows….. Needless to say I sent back the standard battery and I am left with a $2000 desktop that looks like a laptop.

I can say that it is not a Vista problem.
I’m running XP on my dv6000 and have the same charging issue.
The bolt is blinking and battery doesn’t charge at all.
I did what Mykol404 recommended: change the energy plan (15 segs) and then took the battery in and out very fast (with the ac plugged in) for 15 segs.
Doing that is the only way i can charge my battery when it goes crazy.

    2. After the update, went to the Device Manager and uninstalled Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery (under Batteries). For step by step procedure go to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01174488&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3256595
    3. Click on Scan for hardware changes icon on the Device Manager menu. This will re-install #2

    After that, battery started charging.

I hope this will help you too.

    Goodluck

I have a HP DV6000 and had issues in the beginning with my computer and I got it fixed and got the computer back and it started saying “plugged in not charging” so I turned on my computer, took the battery out while it was still turned on, then snapped it back in, and it is now charging. Hopefully this will have fixed my problems!

I was having this same issue. however i like everyone else tried everything. i can gurantee you this is a VISTA issue! however theres a solution too this problem.

    Create your own power plan…

it works. just go do it. you will thank me later. it was already mentioned above.

I got same problem with my IBM x61. All solution didnot work. any other solution?

I dont think this is a VISTA issue. I had restored my PC. from 2 weeks ago, when everything just fine. But still can fix the problem

I’ve tried most all of the suggestions in this thread and nothing works. It’s odd that there isn’t an “official” solution posted for this problem. This thread has existed for almost 1 year. I don’t have time or patience to deal with experimenting with some of the suggestions offered. If there is a moderator to this thread, please highlight the solution when it is found in the future and save everyone from reading through this slop.

my laptop is Dell XPS M1210 and i have the sam e problem too. Removing the battery and put in back i think is not the permanent solution. my battery now point to 2% and i can’t charging my battery anymore (T_T)

and i have check in the bios panel. it say something the bios can’t recognize the charger.
so, i think this is not Vista problem (eventough i wanna change to XP… :) )

SONY VAIO owners with this problem take note.

VAIO will do this to Vista on purpose. It is a latpop software function designed to prolong the lifetime of the battery. Basically it sets thresholds (50% and 80%) past which it tells Vista to stop charging the battery.

To fix it (which you may choose NOT to do for good reasons) you manage it using the VAIO Central utility. Go to the List tab and chose “Battery Care Function”. Here you’ll see the various options for balancing battery longevity versus battery power availability.

Sony Support has a KB article C554057 that describes how to get to this setting.

I don’t know if other laptop mfg’s have a similar approach. I DO know that SONY’s own chat support team didn’t know anything about it. Other mfg support teams may have the same knowledge deficit regarding ther own products.

This drove me nuts for a week so I hope it’s helpful to at least some of you.

I just wanted to give you my solution. I was having the same trouble, I went through all the solutions noted above, and it turns out that it was a loose pin inside the computer where the AC charger plugs into the laptop.

If your battery isn’t charging, leave the power cord plugged in and the computer on. Take the battery out and plugg it in 2 or 3 times until it says, “pulgged in, charging” - EASY FIX

If this doesn’t work, put a LITTLE water on the battery contacts (just enough to get is moist) WORKS EVERY TIME!!

  146. By Stuart on May 14, 2008 | Reply

Just a follow up to my prior comment. I sent my computer in for repair. They fixed the pin (replaced the board) and it works fine now.

Problem fixed. At 1 PM, I woke up and turned my laptop on, and kept on using it (On AC Power), at 2 PM I took the AC off and used it on battery until 3 PM [yes, the timings *are* correct). At 3 PM I plugged it in again and my battery was 46% left. It said, ‘plugged in, not charging’, to which I freaked out and Googled it. Read alot of people’s experiences, so at 4:02 PM I turned my laptop off. Completely shutted it down, took the battery out, and took unplugged the charging as well. I left it until 4:20 PM. Then I put the battery back in. Then left it for a few minutes and then plugged it in (without turning the laptop on). In about 2-3 minutes the LED on my laptop showed that its charging. At 4:40 PM I turned the laptop on. It showed 66% charged and plugged in and charging.

I have a DV6000, and I have the exact same problem. I however, do not have Vista, I have XP. It is not just a Vista problem. Ridiculous. I left my computer in my laptop bag for like 2 weeks, and all of a sudden when I turn my laptop on again it charges just fine. The tip about leaving the AC in and taking the battery out works well!

  149. By Djitsch on May 16, 2008 | Reply

I solved the problem by taking out the battery and putting it in again while vista was running.

I also had the same problem where the laptop was plugged in but the power was stuck at 4%. I read thru all of these opinions and then simply took the battery out and put it back in a voila! its charging again. very strange…

I just found a solution for my laptop. I had same problem with my dell. I bought new adapter , it worked with that a month but now doing the same thing “ plugged in , not charging. I took the battery out when its plugged in and my laptop was on. I cut the power and wait one minute and I plugged again. After I open the laptop I put the battery back and now it is working normally and charging. Hope it is going to work for you too. Good luck!

I got it fixed. Here is what i did:
I took out the battery, and hooked the AC adapter (without the battery) and then put the battery back.
All of a sudden, it started charging and now i checked (after a couple of hours of charging) it, it is 97% charged and (hopefully) charging.
thanx anyways for all the clues

THIS WORKED GREAT FOR ME ON MY dv6000! THANKS ANE!!!

Hello,i also faced the same problem. I diagonised this and found that whenever hp machine, downloaded updates(security updates) from website,it somehow shutdown the charging. You have to install the updates and then restart the pc. It will start charging again.

So I read through all the suggestions here, because my HP was doing the same thing…and if I leave the power cord plugged in and remove the battery and then put it back in, it will charge fully, no issues. However, once drained, I have to go through that procedure again. I can’t see that this is a good long term solution at all…surely there is something more permenant that can be done?

I have an HP Pavilion tx 1000 and had that “plugged in, not charging” problem at 3%.

Here’s how I fixed it. I removed the battery while the laptop was plugged in to AC power. I blew (with my mouth rather than compressed air … I know, bad) on the connecting terminals of the battery as they were a bit dusty.

    I replaced the battery.

Now it says, “3% (plugged in, charging)” and the power light is no longer blinking.

Glad to know I’m not alone in having had this problem. Hope my solution helps someone out there.

The problem is not with the charger. I have 7 HP DV6000 computers in our office and I tried using different chargers on the computer that was giving me the annoying message “plugged in, not charging” and it still didn’t charge. When I replaced the battery it started working. Therefore, if you are having this issue and none of the suggestions above worked, you should ask for a new battery from HP anything else will be a waste of time.

Found the problem and the fix guys ^.^ the problem isn’t in the software or the adaptor, its in the battery compartment. The fans that cool the computer pick up dust and dirt from the air and some of the particles end up in the battery compartment, all you have to do is shut down your computer, take out any plug ins such as your ac adaptor, and any usb plug ins so all you have left is the laptop in your hands, then take out the battery and wipe the inside clean with a swifter dust cloth or if there isn’t much dust then just make sure you haven’t got any excess saliva in your mouth and blow the dust out. then replace the battery and restart the computer. Good luck and thanks for suggesting removing the battery in the first place, it inspired my fix ^.^

I accidentally left my lap top at 20% unplugged all night, and, of course it shut off. That was two weeks ago, it hasn’t charged sense. It is still at 0% and is plugged in, not charging.

  164. By Techie on Jun 10, 2008 | Reply

The problem so far can be seen on 6000 models and Compaqs in the F500 series, with Vista.

The problem so far have been solved by the latest BIOS. The animation of charging will only show about 3-4 runs, then stops after reinstalling the MS Battery ACPI. But it still charges, and says so in HP batt check.

I dont know where the problem really is, but i guess it is some sort of combination of BIOS/Vista/MS batt. drivers.

I have the same problem as all you guys and have tried all solutions that was suggested. 1. remove battery while AC is still connected and plug it back again after a couple of minutes. 2. Update my BIOS 3. Reinstall the MS Battery ACPI. of all NONE HAS WORKED!!! I have a HP dv6000tx running on vista. This thing is driving me crazy, any other suggestions???

  166. By Jetty on Jun 18, 2008 | Reply

It some what works because if I reinstall the MS Battery ACPI it will start charging but only for awhile than stops. Likewise with the “remove battery while plugged in” solution.

Ok this is how i got mine to work. I drained the battery to 0%. then i plugged in my AC adapter and started it up. still said (Plugged in, Not charging) so i then shut it down. i unplugged the AC adapter from the wall leaving it plugged into the laptop and pushed the power button a few times. it blinked very fast and i pushed it like 10 times till it stopped blinking. i then plugged the AC adapter back in and started the laptop up again. It Worked!

I have same issue 0% not charging on my new Compaq Pressario F560 which is running Kubuntu Linux. Thus all of you running Vista : it is NOT a Vista issue. Removing/replacing battery while on AC power and pc running didn’t help.

  170. By Peter on Jun 21, 2008 | Reply

Many thanks for all your comments. I finally managed to get mine charging. By the way, same issue 0% and not charging, blinking blue led, but on a Linux Kubuntu Ubuntu OS. Here’s what I did, not sure if any but the last step are required.
    - removed battery and ac power
    - push power button
    - add battery and ac power
    - push power button and keep pressed for about 5 seconds

for some reason, the blue charging light is then solidly on, indicating a proper charging state. I left it charging for about 20mins, then switched on, and all seems to be fine.

i have a brand new HP Compaq 6720s. just got it 3 days ago and i went out for the day, came home and my computer wasnt plugged in all the way. so i plugged it in when it was 39% expecting it to charge and came back an hour later to see it say plugged in; not charging 39%. Its been like this for a few hours now. I just wanted to add that i got a new model and its still doing it. idk if theres an actual fix for this.
